3D Printed Steps (PETG - Carbon Fiber)

Has anyone tried these yet?
I like the minimalist design. Wondering about longevity due UV exposure and temperature swings. I think I'd be inclined to get the 9" version.

Having a 3dprinter myself and knowing the cost of a spool of PETG-CF and how much material is likely used for these, no way in hell I'd pay $130-$170 for these.

PETG-CF is decent, but they will eventually start to deform or get brittle depending on how much time they spend in the sun. I've had non-cf PETG parts deform in the cab over one summer. The CF will prolong deforming, but wont prevent it. They really should be made out of ABS or ASA.

I'd have no problem using printed steps, but that's not the right material for them.

My neighbor has a 3d printing business but uses resin. Made some resi mounts for my coil overs on the LJ. He used rigid 10k material which is insanely durable and resistant to heat. Came out pretty clean too.

I always wanted to make a set similar to those in steel. With a set screw to hold them in place and easy enough to remove for wheeling.

Agreed, I thought the price point was a little steep as well. Son-in-law has a 3D printer, wonder if his setup could turn out something similar in a more durable material as you suggest.

Never understood steps which are at sill height. Leg is already up there. Maybe I will in the next decade.

I have smittybilt steps/sliders, (which are awesome) and the "step" is at the bottom of the door almost, totally unusable for an entry step, unless you are a kid under 4ft...

It's not as much about height alone as it is about height + extension / flex because you still have to get past the door sill and down to the floor if you have no step at all. For some, that's a hell of a stretch even at stock ride height. For those with a few extra inches in lift &/or tire, that slight difference is the difference between getting in comfortably or not getting in at all. And the one in the link above is clearly lower than "sill height." My issue with that design isn't about height as much as it is about foot placement. It's fine for getting in, but getting out usually requires a whole different foot placement, which is why longer boards exist in the first place. Not to mention that snap-on also means snap-off and if there's anything I've learned in life it's that anything on a moving vehicle needs to be secured or it's likely to become a projectile that you've inadvertently launched at someone... maybe on a motorcycle, maybe a pedestrian.

There are some aluminum ones available on eBay for not much more. I have been using steel ones I bolted on and bought for about $120 (price has gone up now) for almost 4 years now.

No way would I use PETG-CF for that. The sun would beat them up, I would be using ASA as a minimum so that it can take the direct sun and heat. ABS will get tore up by direct sunlight if it isn't properly coated. If, I was selling something like that I would have to be selling it for all conditions. Just because PETG-CF works up north, doesn't mean it will work long in the NV-AZ desert.
