Is there a noticeable on road handling difference between a 40x17 VS 40x20 tire due to the side wall height? Does a tire like the Nitto Trail Grappler negate this due to thew stiffer side wall? Thanks!

Off road you'll definitely find the 17 handling better. On road, the 20s likely will handle noticeably better. But that's an oversimplification, it depends a bit on the specific wheel. But all else being the same, that generalization will be accurate.

Probably KMC Grenade Crawls. I was hoping to get the 20" but it seems like most of the 20" Nittos in 38-40" are not available now. So I may have to go 17" unless Nitto gets back in gear.

The 17 is going to have a 11.5 inch sidewall.

The 20 is going to have a 10 inch sidewall.

As a point of reference a 35 x 12.5 /17 is going to have a 9 inch sidewall. So even with a 20 you have plenty of sidewall.

They both will enormously heavy and will reduce what ever RPM your engine is turning at currently by 20%. So if you were turning 1800 rpm on the highway before, you will now be turning 1440.

My goal is not to re gear. 38-40” + banks tuner seems to be the limit without re gearing.

I'm running 40's on stock gears and I'm not bothered at all by it. It still moves and pulls an average of 19mpg.

I mean, you don't ever HAVE to. It just depends on what you're comfortable with
