Anyone know a way to reprogram the shift points in this transmission? I can’t stand when it goes into 7th or 8th gear at 40mph. It was probably programed this way for the fuel economy rating, but it’s destroying the engine and it just sucks. It creates constant ‘lugging conditions’ in city/town driving which then creates the detonation condition, which is really bad/loud on my JT.
The only way I can see this happening is by getting jeep to come out with a new ‘tune’ or whatever, but how does one go about trying to make that happen?
Please do not reply with any comment about jeepcares, because they are as helpful as gum stuck to the bottom of your shoes.
Also, please keep your “manually shift it” comments to yourself.
TIA ?

Do you not love it when the manufacturer pre-supposes how you want to drive? Your complaint illustrates my abhorrence for auto slush boxes.

When I put 35's on mine and corrected the speedo with jscan, I noticed mine will shift normally accelerating on the highway on slight incline until I get to 4th gear. 1st, 2nd and 3rd all shift at around the same rpm(3000-ish) but then it won't shift into 5th until about 5000 rpms unless I let off of the pedal a little bit. So when going up slight hills I shift manually sometimes. It's annoying.

Jscan, AlfaOBD, Tazer, or the Dealer can all be used to adjust the shift points. It is done by changing the tire size in the truck's computer.

If you are having these issues with stock wheels and tires, then take it to the dealer for a transmission check. The first step would be to reinitiate the learn procedure it goes through when new.

I have a tazer & 35’s. It’s not that. I’ve had the learning bs reset 4 times already. There are others (shadowspapa) with the same complaint. Shot in the dark here, maybe it’s because I live on a dirt road. Every time I leave/return home it’s an 8 minute drive @ 6-10mph. Confusing the TCM from how I actually drive on the street???

Sport mode...manually changes the shift points.

Seriously though when in town mine rarely goes above 6th gear when going 40 mph. 80% of my driving is on 35-40 mph streets. When at speed almost always in 5th and 6th.

This, mine stays around 5th to 6th gear at 40mph, i have to get to 45 or better for it to go to 7th or 8th.

My honest answer whenever anyone complains about this on any vehicle is to learn where that shift point is, and then just avoid that condition. Often times it's as simple as taking the road at 43mph or 47mph instead of 45mph. That small adjustment can get rid of the bouncing gears as the transmission has a higher confidence of which gear to choose. You just need to learn where it is. Changing a shift point just means it'll do that somewhere else.

I think you should read the post again.

Sorry. I took this as "it can't decide between 7th or 8th."

...I can’t stand when it goes into 7th or 8th gear at 40mph...
That was my bad.

But if you're just upset about the gear it's in, I mean, there's only so much you can do if you don't want to contact Jeep and don't want the "manually shift it" comments....

Put some 5.38s in there and she won’t lug the engine in any gear!
Seriously though, I feel your pain and it would be nice to be able to program the shift points like everything else.
