It doesn’t work for everyone but I’ve always camped like this.

Who doesn’t love sleeping in a hammock?

You are right not for everyone. I know the hammock looks and feels exotic and maybe even romantic but after 2 hours my back refuses to sleep on the hammock LOL I need a hard flat surface...

Have you ever been in a platform hammock? They’re flat and hang from a branch overhead
There’s also triples that make a triangle between trees. I have one in my backyard

Both are flat and hard enough for memory foam mattresses

something can fit in that area to sleep on.
with modifications, the drawer system raises the bed top up a bit, and no rtt noise or mpg hit, one of those collapsible bed toppers in a thick canvas.

(and it pays to be 5'9" in some aspects of life)
Just FYI

My RTT makes no extra noise that i can tell, it takes 1mpg off.

Somebody will make a nice shell for it, and it will be much less than starting over with a flat bed. Your small enough(not a dig) that you probably can use the back for sleeping. Have a canvas shop build a tent annex that would attach to the shell, maybe add one of the 180* awnings and your in there.

I bet you'll see an adequate shell from Leer of ARE in less than a year
I want a shell. I contacted Leer and ... no response.
Im sure someone will make one though.

I’d just put everything on the tent then load my gear use the cover to keep it in place and head out hoping I don’t get cramps from not being able to stretch out

I, being older retired and has spent a lot of time on the ground in all weather, I overland so my jt will pull a military m101a2 trailer. I will have a bat wing awning, roof two tent, a hot water shower. I have a 9x12 out door patio rug, plus other equipment. I do over landing not rock crawling. I think that having a luxury as a patio rug to make my shoes off and walk around the camp is nice. My time for very rough camping is over having done it off and on for twenty plus years.

Hmm a 4'x5' tent would probably be ok if you're 13 y/o, a midget or paraplegic, other than that I can't see much virtue there
They are 6" because you gain the tailgate length.

Another great option for overlanding (longer trips without rock crawling) is a pop up truck camper.

I have a Hallmark on my Super Duty and have taken it on some amazing trips.

For the Gladiator a company called Four Wheel Campers makes a relatively lightweight unit designed for a 5 ft bed. The trick with this type of camper is to be very careful of the extras you add to it to keep the weight under your gvwr.

Here’s an example of their base model.
