I guess after losing one of my best friends, I'm a bit more owly, grumpy and just not a happy camper or in any sort of a mood other than crappy.
A total bitch of a day. It all happened so FAST..
Tuvak, one of the most perfect cats ever born - is gone as of today. It was a total shock, we didn't see it coming and a week ago if you'd have asked about him, I'd have said he'll be around for a good long time to come.
Tonkinese are a very different breed and unless you've ever known one, you might think all cats are aloof, and use people only for food and water.

Tuvak did what he usually does in the evening last week - crawled up on me while I sat, and draped over my right shoulder purring REALLY LOUD in my ear, then dropped down into my arm. I thought his breathing was rapid - and his stomach moved more than usual while he breathed, but I figured - maybe he was out of breath or just excited for the attention.
I let it go a day, and realized it wasn't any better and his breathing was rapid even when just laying on me after a while and being more relaxed - so I made an online appointment to get him into the vet.
They could not see him for a couple of days and they called after seeing my description of the symptoms and suggested I get him into the emergency 24/7 vet on the other side of town.
He had the radioactive iodine treatment for his thyroid in early 2024 after a severe allergic reaction to the only meds that can be given for that condition. They said that it had affected his kidneys but keeping an eye on that and with special diet and regular blood tests, that might be controlled for a fairly long time.
I knew that his time with the thyroid problems led to heart issues - slightly enlarged, etc.
The doctor this AM took him back to get and did an ultrasound and found his heart was quite enlarged, especially one half, and it looked like parts of his lungs had no air in them.
I approved total blood tests and xrays.
She came back and asked if he usually responded poorly to vet visits - I said other than meowing a lot - no, it was a perfect gentleman.
The xrays confirmed enlarged heart, fluid around the heart, and fluid in the lungs - parts of them not working.
A bit later she came back in - and I knew by her look................ she said - do we need to get your wife on the phone?
Apparently he went into heart failure, and totally went lateral and they had to give him oxygen and some diuretics to reduce the fluid and help his breathing until we made a decision.
The problem with treating the heart would be hurting the kidneys - they need more fluid and his heart is saying NO MORE fluids.
They said he could be admitted into ICU - quite a process and unlikely to do a lot long term.
I said no, he's struggling to stay alive, he hates being away from me and - in the process of me being with him for a few final minutes to prep for ending his pain, he started foaming at the mouth -bloody looking foam, got a sudden burst of crazy strength I knew what was going on - the final struggle to live.
I called the vet into the room fast, and I think if the vet hadn't ended his struggle medically, I don't think he'd have gone another 5 minutes.
He seemed so fine at home this AM - other than his fast breathing - he ate, and purred and was snuggled up with his brother in of course the smallest heated cat bed we have.
Just that fast - he body had had enough.

I had my wife on the phone so the vet could explain things once, and I made the call to put him down and I could hear my wife choking up over the phone.
She came out and helped me dig the grave for him......... something she's never done before.

He wasn't so much a cat as he was a baby. He hated it when we were gone for long and insisted that he be on my shoulder or in my arm on my chest, not my lap.

Tonkinese Cat Characteristics
Active and intelligent, the Tonkinese loves to play, and its easygoing temperament makes it content to spend time with family without requiring excessive attention or stimulation. It is happy to "speak" when spoken to but doesn't vocalize excessively.

The Tonk has an irrepressible, people-loving personality. It eagerly seeks to be pet, held, talked to, played with, and cuddled on a warm lap. Families with young children who need a tolerant and playful cat may find the Tonkinese to be the perfect choice.

Trying to get close to my face. He liked to lay with his face next to my face or neck - often with his nose in my ear. Sometimes he'd crawl up and rub his nose against mine.

Sorry to hear about your furry buddy. It’s hard to lose a pet, especially if you’ve had them a long time. They become a furry kid. I’ve been attached to a few of our feral cats over the years, but none of them ever got too friendly. We’ve got a few dogs, however, who stay stuck to us. I had to put my 12 year old lab to sleep a few weeks back, and it still bothers us. Our 13 year old chihuahua is asleep in my lap right now. When something happens to her, I’ll be lost. Once again, very sorry for you.

Sorry to hear about the kitty cat Bill, that's tough! Especially when it's sudden and unexpected.

One of mine is 22 now and life is just getting hard for her. The vet can't really pin any one thing as a problem right now (other than early kidney disease) - she's just damn old and tired. I fear it won't be terribly long and the bad days are going to outnumber the good and we'll have to do something.

I keep telling her I need her to die quickly - I don't want to drag this out. It's been a long time coming, at least it won't be a shock.

Morbid - but I have a way of dealing with things...

Oh Bill, I am saddened by this news , I lost my favorite dog 4 yrs ago and I still think about him often. I know it doesn't help but my heart goes out to you and hopefully like we did we found a new buddy by accident.
I stopped at a parts house to buy a part for the Jeep and the owners dog was in there with him . I petted him and He said Hey we have 2 pups for sale from a litter He just fathered. Well after talking it over for a day or so we went for it . He has turned out to be a great buddy.
I hope you can find a new buddy .
They never replace the original just help us along.

Something... something... software.
Sorry to hear you had to go thru this. My wife is a veterinarian and it weighs on her when she has to be the one to end a cherished friend's suffering. Especially when its someone she's seen since they were a pup or kitten. We had a miniature dachshund that made it to 19 years old and that was a really rough day for her.

I know nothing can possibly fix things but time, but maybe a pic of my newest little buddy might give you a quick smile for a moment. This is Princess Merida (from the Disney movie, "Brave"). She's a true teeny weeny, weighing under 10lbs.

This one the sun was coming in the window and messed with the lighting. There was a toy hanging from an elastic string on a hook in the ceiling. The final leap was about 6' high when Tuvak had let go of it and it had rebounded up and stuck to the string way up high.

I once had closet doors open so they touched each other in sort of a barricade to block off the front room while I put down new floor - to keep the cats out. Next thing I know the little fart is up on top of the doors looking at me - holy cow, a leap straight up and catching the top of the door and climbing up?
When he was younger, if you stood still long enough he'd literally jump up onto your shoulder and either sit, or lay draped over a shoulder.

Very sorry for both of you. Putting pet down is a horrible thing to go through. Many of us have done it, but that never makes it easier.

Sorry about your loss.

I had to put my first dog down in 2017. She was 17 and I had her from about 1 year old on. She had the typical symptoms of old age, but then the occasional seizures started. After the 3rd one in a couple weeks... off to the vet. And while the vet didn't say they were doing any real harm, I knew that it was time.

She was a good doggo.

17 is a fairly long time. That's the sort of dog face you just want to reach out to and make friends with. What a great pic.

Tuvak was only 14 1/2. That's a really short time. Punkin went to 19, most of the others hit at least 15-16.
