The local dealership determined that my Sport S with 7k miles was operating normally at the time of inspection. They noted some timing chain and engine noise is typical. They also stated that based on drain back some “noises” can take longer or shorter to change and become less loud. Overall, I’m satisfied for now. However, I suspect the warm weather will take up some of the slop (expansion) causing our knocking and tapping symptoms. The recent near 100 degree temps here in CA have made the knock nearly impossible to distinguish over the last few days. I provided the service advisor with a similar video as posted here:

Drain back on what? If they are talking oil, why would that have any impact on sounds?

Within a second or two of starting, there's oil to all systems. It doesn't take minutes.

Due to expansion, some sounds like piston slap and so on can quiet as things warm up - even some valve train sounds can seem less but drain back?

I’m glad you had some resolution. Unfortunately, my knock is only audible to the naked ear (when temps are mild) from the 2 to 6 minute mark after cold start and then it fades. So, ?, it’s looking like a tough case to prove to techs and service advisors with selective hearing. I may have to pay an independent mechanic to evaluate.

I had the same issue. Once the truck warmed up it would fade. The dealer kept it for a few days to confirm it was consistent.

I took the JT to another dealership and observed the tick/knock with two mechanics on 7/7. They heard it in the lower end from the driver’s side wheel well and kept the truck over the weekend for further observation. Today I received a call from the service advisor and guess what…. They got approval from S.T.A.R. to replace the engine. They didn’t provide specifics and will not be tearing into the 3.6, but there was mention of possible wrist pin slop, which would explain the tap near the bottom end. Im at 7k, 2021 Nacho Sport S, Max Tow, Selec Trac. I’m a little shocked to be honest. The silver lining is that I found a dealership with some good dudes working on our Jeeps. @calipoontappa called it.

Glad to hear they were quick to help I had some issues but JeepCares helped. Mine was much louder. Now the transfer case seal is leaking so they are replacing the transfer case. Just need the transmission to blow for the trifecta.

I have noticed the same symptoms, cold start tick, slap, knock sounds over the last 20k miles. Same build time frame as yours as it is a 21 sport s max tow nacho also. Looks like I'll have to find a good dealer. My dealer consistently overfilled my engine oil....

Hey @JeepCares, what's your take on this?

I just want it fixed at this point. It sucks having to be overly persistent about mechanical failures. I had taken the JT in for axle leak repair and steering pop from loose ball joints, but this was like pulling teeth. Meanwhile, I’m without my adventure vehicle during prime adventure season. I hope they give me an extension on my warranty for all the bs. I think Stellantis took me serious when I told them I was going to pay an independent mechanic to evaluate the engine. On another note: For every time the service advisors explain away engine noise as normal, they should tell us exactly which components are generating knocks or ticks or taps. The 3.6 has been around long enough for Jeep to have this dialed in.

Heading to the dealer on Saturday .. Tick on my JT is loud on start up and disappears once warm. Does not increase with rpm range, not sure if it makes a difference or not.

@ShadowsPapa

Literally in my service paperwork:

7A64373B-8F3D-4E72-BBE3-C0386F945B54.jpeg
The sounds from a freshly started engine (cold start) disappear within seconds of oil pressure building. The lash adjusters pump up and take out valve train sounds.
IMO, anything beyond 10 seconds is not from lack of oiling or "drain back" (which is likely how they are describing the oil galleries being not charged from sitting, waiting for the oil pump to turn on the faucet, so to speak)
If I recall my FCA docs on these, the oil filter doesn't actually "drain" like many until you take things loose to change it.
Years ago some literally emptied the filter over a day or two and valve clatter was scary for a while.

Thanks for the counter point. S.T.A.R. has authorized engine replacement at 7k miles. Long blocks are almost 6 grand before shipping on Mopar.com.

They must figure it's not valve train - or - are tired of replacing valve train parts and then having other issues later, who knows.
It's their call!

Just reporting back to this thread after getting my JT back this week. The dealership pulled off a pretty clean job, but should I be concerned or irritated that my service paperwork says they installed a remanufactured long block? I’d expect a reman if my Jeep was at the tail end of the powertrain warranty, but I only have 7k miles! On the bright side, it’s not knock(on wood)ing anymore.
