Bought my gladiator in January. I’ve always used CarPlay in my old car, and I prefer Google Maps. A couple of months in my Gmaps would freeze while driving and would cause serious directions issues. I missed exits a few times not realizing the phone had froze! Then, I started having offline issues too—google maps was even freezing when I wasn’t in the car. Then other apps started freezing. I assumed it was the phone. As work provides it, I had them get me a new one. Only had it a month, fresh from the box. At first everything was working great! Until it didn’t. Maps started freezing again. I don’t think it’s related to the phone now because of work confidentiality protocols, new phones are never restored from a back up of the old; you have to start fresh and redownload every app one by one and you carry over no background data. But even more telling, I had my son plug in his phone and enter directions when we went to AC this weekend, and it started making his phone freeze. Am I going crazy?!

I’ve also encountered a few times where suddenly my ports weren’t charging. I googled and did troubleshooting, reset fuses a few times and it wouldn’t work… until the next day I turned on truck and suddenly it worked again. I’ll starting to wonder if there’s a connection here (no pun intended) and if there’s a general issue with the electronics & computer components that control the connection between my screen, the usb ports, and my phone. Not sure how it would mess up our phones though. Also considering a trip to Apple, but was curious if anyone else experienced similar things.

I have a 2020 and my Uconnect is buggy especially after iOS updates. the issue mine has is it randomly fails to identify that my phone is plugged in. but if I switch between the dash plug and the one in the center console it usually resolves the issue. But my phone never freezes, it does stop charging sometimes but my phone says it a heat issue but in the summer it gets pretty hot here in tampa so I can understand that

Sounds like something else is going on. The Jeep doesn't "write back" to the phone in that way. It would be a security nightmare for Apple if it did. Every time I've seen an iPhone freeze when connected, the culprit is the iPhone apps trying to play nice with CarPlay and it just doesn't. I would further guess that a specific app you have on the phone is trying to interact with CarPlay, isn't being friendly about it, and is causing an issue. That could easily carry over once unplugged from the Jeep as the apps stay running in the background and the problem persists.

You also mentioned a possible faulty connection, that certainly could cause issues for the iPhone software. But that's also not the Jeep writing to the phone, nor is it a corruption issue. Frequent communication issues could easily cause the iPhone software to glitch out and have a memory leak or other situation that freezes it up in any vehicle. Solution there is probably to replace the cable, but rest assured that's not Jeep 'corrupting your phone'. That's more of the in-dash display 'freezing' when it loses connection and it waiting to regain connection with the phone to update. If the phone and radio are constantly trying to dance around intermittent connection issues, they may never sync back up completely, and it looks like it's frozen forever.

Something simple you could try, though, is to use a known good cable and try different USB ports and see what happens. Some ports, like the one in the armrest console, have been known to have communication troubles vs the in-dash ones. Finding a repeatable pattern like that will help.

I have had similar issues with Waze. This also happens with android radios, even when not using CarPlay. I found that if I open the app on the phone as it happens it clears up.

I agree with all this. My phone (iPhone 14+ pro) and my last phone (iPhone X) have never had any issues connected to the Jeep. My wife's phones (same as mine) will cause the uConnect to lock up and crash when it is connected to either the dash or the console USB outlet... her phone has "charging" and battery life issues all the time, but she refuses to start her phone from scratch...

I think Apple corrupts their own phones. Seems every year they get worse and worse unless the apps are barely able to run on the current generation phones.

At least that's what I hear a lot with iPhone users. I use Samsung android and I get a new phone every 5 years or so and just cause I wanna, hell my S10+ is a beast and it's now my daughter's phone. Lol

If you have any important apps back them up but otherwise I would recommend a wipe. My iPhone has spit the bed before and a simple wipe had it acting as good as new. Just a suggestion?

The same issues I have with WAZE freezing sporadically in the Jeep also happened in my Hyundai Santa Fe. So not a vehicle issue.

Mine iPhone does too. I noticed it more in area with spotty data service too. Sometimes my apple maps will not even load directions but that happens on the phone regardless. I noticed it when i am leaving my house and the phone is transfering from my home internet and data plan. like i'm still connected to the wifi or tethered but data isn't transferring. and the kids trying to hot spot to the iphone too. 1st world problems here!! LOL
