Hey y’all! The other day I went to the Jeep dealership and asked for transmission fluid for my 2021 Gladiator Rubicon. They handed me this fluid BG 3153 Low Viscosity Full Synthetic (picture below), and told me this is what they use in all the Gladiators and other Jeeps with the 8-speed transmission.

I went ahead and bought it, but before I do the fluid change, I just wanted to ask around:

  • Has anyone else used this specific fluid in their Gladiator?
  • Is this what your dealer or local shop uses too?
  • Any long-term experiences or issues?
  • Does it meet the required spec for the 8HP75 transmission?
Not trying to overthink it—I just like to be sure before I pour it in. Appreciate any feedback from folks who’ve done this already.

Thanks!

That’s not the right stuff. It’s supposed to be Mopar ATF 8/9 Speed. I have the part number in the garage on a few quarts. I’ll grab it before I go to bed.

I also have a 2021 rubicon, and used my vin to buy the right fluid.

That looks OK but my trans has lifetime ATF in it.

BG indicates “This automatic transmission fluid meets or exceeds the performance criteria of many low viscosity transmission fluids, including… ZF LifeGuard Fluid 8”

Now that would be cool if it’s a fraction of the price and it truly met the specification, but I found it to be the same price, if not more than try ZF LifeGuard 8 and Mopar 8 speed fluids. The price of the 8 speed fluid has come down enough that it’s just not worth messing with 3rd party brands.

If it were me, I’d just get the real deal.

BG Products is a B2B brand that caters to independents. To qualify for the Lifetime BG Protection Plan, the service must be performed by a "BG shop". The liability limit on an automatic transmission is $2K.

It is true that BG Products states that PN 3153 is compliant with ZF LifeguardFluid 8. MOPAR 8 & 9 Speed ATF (68218925AB) is the correct ATF, for the automatic transmission, used by (most) Jeep dealers. MOPAR 68218925AB is an exact equivalent to LifeguardFluid 9. I am suspicious of any dealer that does not use MOPAR unless there is a serious supply shortage (like during COVID).

There is a lot of reading to do on ATF for the automatic transmission. I suggest that you start with the following link. After reading that post, you will be directed to another one of my posts in the middle of an excellent thread on this subject. My links cover the basic considerations.

What’s the milage on your 21? I would take that back and get the Mopar 8/9 speed ATF. If you are the least bit concerned about changes or effects in the transmission by using something else, then don’t change the chemistry of what was in there from day one.

Lifetime fluid only exists in marketing. Running any auto trans much past 60k without a fluid change is foolish.
I could be wrong, but I’m 299% sure they were joking. :) But you’re correct. “For the life of the car you’ll trade in two years!”

Box says it meets the ZF Lifeguard 6 and 8 spec. I used Redline D6 when I changed my transmission fluid.

I believe when an auto manufacturer says "life time fill/fluid" they are referring to the life time of the warranty.

ZF recommends the fluid be changed around 65K kilometers.

It doesn’t matter if it meets specs. The issue to avoid is mixing different fluids. And flushing out all the old to be able to switch fluids will likely dislodge debris and could cause damage or failure. Just use mopar fluid. Why is this even a debate? Oh yeah. Because aftermarket fluid is half price. Not a good place to save money.

I also have a 2021 rubicon, and used my vin to buy the right fluid.
The dealer used the VIN for me, also. I know it's not MOPAR oil. This is what they said they use unless somebody specifically asks for the Mopar factory fluid.
