Yes, you can check what colour it is through the transmission “fill plug”. Get a Q-tip for this. We are only checking colour. Make sure the truck is either level (frame level) or the back of the frame is slightly higher than the front. Do not try this with the back lower than the front.

Turn on the engine, crawl underneath and undo the fill plug. With everything cold, no oil should come out. (The frame is level or back is slightly higher)

With the fill plug pulled, take your Q-tip and insert into hole and have it go down till it meets the oil. You will have to bend the Q-tip a bit to curve down. The fluid won’t be far. The oil will look green. The Mopar 8/9 speed ATF is green.

Where is the fill plug - drivers or passenger side?

Ill have to wait till this weekend to check it. The trans does shift just fine though. So not sure what would happen IF they did use the wrong fluid. I would like to think whoever pulled the pan and replaced it would have noticed the color and made sure to use the right stuff.

It is very possible to overfill this transmission which may have caused a leak which you are seeing if the oil level check was done with a cold transmission rather than waiting for it to heat up. The difference between “oil level” check while cold or within the temperature range is a fair bit of oil volume. I don’t know exactly, I haven’t experimented with that, would be super easy to do. But if the tech filled it up after the new pan while cold then capped it off and signed off on it, then when that transmission got to running temp which is way higher than the temp when checking level, that EXTRA volume of oil has to go somewhere and if it’s showing to come from up higher on the transmission (out a breather???) then I’d say that’s the problem.

So if, on the weekend, you “level” your frame, turn on the engine and crawl under and pull the fill plug and oil comes out….It’s over filled!! STOP and plug it. Watch the video I posted above and do exactly as described for checking the level. You will have to run the transmission through the gears just as shown in the video, get it to proper checking oil level temperature, pull the plug and let it drain out till it’s a dribble then cap it. Spray brake cleaner around the mess and residue and monitor it.

Or….if as stated above, frame is level, truck is cold and you just started the engine and crawled under and pulled the plug and have oil pour out…..cap it immediately and take it to the dealership and tell them they overfilled it and you want it documented and corrected.

I really dont think this is a trans fluid leak. The color of the fluid is pretty distinctly pink/red in color. So if the trans fluid is green then it has to be the transfer case
