I bought this plug and play kit from the below Ebay seller. T-Harness for the left rear tail light and connector going to the license plate lights. Basically is a relay that cuts power to the license plate lights when it detects the reverse lights on.

Have used it with no issue on my last two Gladiators. The seller makes them in small batches so if it goes out of stock, just watch his listings and usually has new stock within a week or two. He sells other stuff for the JL/JT for doing proximity door lock conversion and actual door harness quick disconnect kits.

His door harness looks awesome. $400 for a pair though - ouch.

The problem becomes - what's your time worth?
You have to crimp each connector or pin on one at a time. You have to own expensive crimping tools (often specialized for each connector type and I know that all too well meaning you have $200-$300 in tools if you went cheap), there's wire, and the knowledge and ability to do it and stand behind the harness - that it will work.

Right now, the harnesses for the wiper motors I restore are $70 plus shipping. There's about 32" of 4 different color wires in a flat sheath, with connectors only on one end.
Now THAT's an OUCH!

Look at what people spend to make a Jeep look tough with no real intention of utilizing the maximum capabilities ........
lifted = good looks
Do they need it? Not in many cases.
At least this wiring is a functional thing that would likely add some value, or at least usability in daily driving.

The harness shown below - 70 bucks (and I have to re-do the ends on some because of the variations in the plastic shells) ->

Yeah, that is pricey but I am impressed with the quality of what I bough for the license plate light bypass harness.

They were stickers/decals to place over the license plate lights.

I made my own out of some satin black vinyl wrap and they do a very good job at cutting down on the glare.
black electrical tape has been working for me the last 6 months.
An additional backup light also helps by reducing the contrast (more overall light in the scene).

bringing this thread back... the glare, is it lessened with the steal bumper? Not sure if anyone has compared plastic to steel glare. I just noticed that its more squared off in the area compared to my plastic bumper that slopes up and rounds off. I was suprised to discover they are shaped differently.

Having owned both types, I would not say they are any different by any discernible means.

Relay. Relay coil activated by backup light circuit, opens the NC (normally closed) points of the relay. (The license plate lights being wired through the relay NC contacts)
Simple and because the license plate lights are a miniscule load, even a very small relay will do - don't need a multi-amp relay. So the whole thing could be made extremely small with the relay being made into the pigtail that taps into the backup lights behind the left tail light.
The other connection would be at the top of the left frame rail near/behind the spare tire to get into the license plate light circuit.

thanks! im going to check the relay and basic continuity ..hopefully just a loose connection.

Lights on....tail lights work.... tag lights off....with or without trans in R so I should only have to chase 2 wires.
