Battery charging Numbers

I know this topic has been covered before. I have a 2 month old 2023 Glad with the freedom package with the 3.6 gas job. I do short trips each day to work , about 4 miles round trip. I check my battery gauge and it reads 14.7 to 14.4. After a 250 mile round trip last month it was reading 13.5. Is this normal for this type of driving. I'm heading for a 40 mile round trip today. It's all stock, and I have no problems with starting. I'm just worried about the two battery system in the truck. Truck build date was May of 2022. I bought her in middle of last May. I love the truck.

It is normal. The short daily trips are not good for the life expectancy of the batteries. You would be a good candidate for a solar charger that connects to the OBD port.

Sounds normal. Mine stays in the 14's most of the time. Even on longer trips. Maybe it's the higher output alternator, or maybe it's the aux bypass I did over a year ago, but I never see 12's now.

Something like this should work. There are a lot of options, but not as many with the OBD port connection. The 12v port turns off with the engine, so you have to connect to the OBD port or run wires through the firewall to the battery.

Another option is a plug-in maintainer, but then you have to connect it every night and remember to unplug it before leaving.

You'll have to remember to plug in / unplug the OBD connector just the same as any other maintainer. I would rather have a underwood on board maintainer that doesn't have anything to do with the OBD connector, techs will be less confused that way. You can mount most waterproof connectors (like a Ctek or Victron charger) to somewhere near the battery, and run the wire down to the front of the grille so you dont have to open the hood every time.

Thanks all. After the trip today , when we got home it was reading 14.3. Next week I'll be doing a 200 mile round trip to the beach ,plus driving around for a couple of days.

Mine did this for a little less than a year and then the battery died. Aux deleted the whole time. With the new battery it’s 13v while cruising and bumps up to 14+ coasting. Functions like it was designed to do…

My 23 constantly reads 14.4-7 after 6 months of mainly only weekend driving with occasional dips into the high 13s. I have the aux package with the bigger battery and alt. So based on all the threads on this it's either-
1. Normal
2. Always charging
3. About to die
4. ESS and I should buy a Tazer, start pulling fuses, re-route my battery cables and chuck my aux battery into the sea before it ruins my life like that stripper I married when I was young.

In the end, I just do my best to put some mileage on the truck, bought a jump starter for just in case and stopped reading battery posts cuz they'll put boogiemen in your head. I figure, depending on your local weather highs and lows, you get about 3 yrs on batteries these days with all the electronics, so I'll really start watching it in 2026 or if the dash starts going crazy with warning lights.

Mine runs 13.0 when driving, climbs up to 14 or so when coasting, etc.
It used to run steady 14.0-14.3 until I charged the batteries again. Now it's running where it should run.

Then the IBS is "off calibration" or there's some other reason it's not fully charging.
Even with the bypass, it should act the same as any other Jeep.
If I don't absolutely completely charge mine with a good charger for a while, the truck never really seems to catch up even driving 2 hours.

Not really if you plug into the trailer connector - I forgot the other day and it simply slid apart, hurting nothing. CRAP. Nothing harmed, worked as I'd hoped. Pulled out of the trailer plug to 12v outlet adapter and dropped to the garage floor.

On a normally operating system, you'll see anything from 12.6 (if the batteries are hot and/or fully charged) to 15.0 (cold weather, batteries not fully charged) and anything in between.
On a system where the batteries are at full state of charge and the IBS is up to snuff, you'll see lower voltages as the system adjusts to battery state of charge, temperatures and engine load.

Hi, If I misread you, my bad. I belong to a surf fishing forum also. There are a couple of members that down a newbe for asking questions. Topics are coverd a lot, and there the same, just at different times. I just get pissed off at these guys that jump a new guy for asking when is the best time to fish the surf. Everyone has to start learning sometime. So , I won't take it so hard from you again. Lol
