I just picked up an RCI off-road rack with bike mounts, partially for reasoning, I am local to them. It’s a solid setup and reasonable prices.

Xtrusion off-road also had side mount racks available but I can’t find them anymore.

I don’t have a rack yet. Im looking for a rack system that would allow mounting bikes on the sides
Mine is on the side RCI rack...this is thru-axle but you can get quick release...or even a combo of both. They do sell an option for the front wheel holder. As for upright, I have not seen any for this type of rack...(in the 90's there were some made but that was specifically for bikerace support vehicles)

Because the Gladiator is the pinnacle of aerodymic? Have you seen an "overlanding" truck lately? Or one with a soft top rtt that can weigh close to 200lbs?
ah yes, the "ol' make a bad thing worse" ideology

if you have a low rack and keep the tent below the roof line you wont lose any mpg. Ask me how i know.

go ahead...ask me.

wanna know why I kept it below the roof line and not outside of the vehicles natural aerodynamics?

Or some aren't as concerned with mpg when they rig their system up. A half rack makes it difficult to store and retrieve things as well as limit the gear storage space. Also limited to 2 man tent. It's all a compromise. We pick and choose what works for us. If you really want aerodynamic with an rtt, skip the rack and mount a hard shell rtt on crossbars and use a deck system for gear storage.

edit: Wanted to add that a rear hitch carrier is a no go for a lot of us that actually hit the trails. We've scraped the rear hitch enough as it is and wouldn't want to make it even worse.

That's great for you. Congratulations. Does not mean the ask here of side mounting a bicycle should be ignored or looked down upon.

If you're so focused on mpg that you'd go shitting on someone else's idea over it, you might be in the wrong crowd. I for one am interested in seeing options like this.

lol no doofus, i need my skottle, awnings, chefs kitchen, and refrigerator on my 2 day overnight. The youtube guys all *need* that shit so I do too.

I wanna look extra outdoorsy by hanging a bicycle out into the wind.

OR some of us enjoy having our wives and kiddos join us in this "extra outdoorsy" adventures. We like for them to be comfortable, eat good food and, gasp, even take hot showers. I like to eat good food and have a nice shower before bed. It's freaken wonderful. We're not barbarians after all.

Are....are you actually having a conversation with yourself on the internet?

Some people actually use things when they go camping or overlanding. It's great you apparently don't, but that doesn't mean others need to follow your rules.

I, for one, could absolutely use a mount like this when I go mountain biking. It's a multi-day event and we all camp out at the trail head. The Jeep gets loaded up with the bed rack and RTT and camping gear, and being able to keep the bike secured and out of the way would be hugely beneficial on those trips.

I'm not sure why this bothers you so much.

I am not an expert in sciency shit

but…I have used both roof and hitch racks and I definitely get lower mpg with the hitch (below roofline) rack 1000%

If you can figure out a way to make one of these work this would be the way I would want to side mount a bike. I have their hitch rack and have owned many others. I hate having to remove the front wheel and or using bike racks that clamp to the frame. The 1UP USA racks clamp onto the tires and hold the bikes well. Now I just need to replace the receiver hitch the previous owner removed :(

I’ve looked into side-mount setups before, and honestly, it’s not super common for good reasons. The extra width can be a pain, especially in tight spots, and it adds drag, which isn’t great for long drives. But if you’re set on it, maybe look at something like an RCI bed rack or similar. You’d probably need to tweak it a bit to make sure the bikes don’t stick out too much. Adding a front wheel holder could help keep them steady too.
One thing I’ve learned the hard way—always think about the gear you’re hauling. Bikes aren’t cheap, and stuff happens on the road. That’s why I’ve got bicycle insurance uk sorted, just in case something goes wrong. It’s been a lifesaver for me, especially on longer trips.

If you pick up a bed rack or really any kind of mounting point made of t-slot, 1 Up has a (pricey) but good option.

been shopping for something like this too when the bed is full of the rest of the camp gear but we want our bikes for the trails nearby. They’d be easier enough to take off or put on top of the rack if we don’t have the kayaks there already.

the main reason I’m leaning to 1UP is it’s the slimmest option of them all I’ve found by several inches.
