Hello,
Started my Jeep up today (Temps were on the 70s, 48,xxx miles bit over 5 years) and got a flashing Glow plug icon on the dash. CEL came on right after. Startup felt fine, power felt fine.

Passed by NAPA and they connected a generic OBD2 reader and got error P0673 Glow Plug Circuit/Open.

Chat GPT said it was 90% sure it was that a glow plug coil failed/broke and the circuit was open. But then 1hr later we stopped and on restart the CEL was gone....

Per ChatGPT I should just replace the glow plug, but cautioned that people have had issues where the glow plug seized in the engine block and then it becomes a huge PITA.... Said to have the engine up to temp, use penetrating oil and be easy on it...

Any ideas why the CEL came and went?

Anyone change glow plugs?

The lady using the reader was not to familiar with it... and im just now seeing the 1/2 on the top right... Now that im back home i might go to another auto parts store and see if they can read old codes and see if anything else is there.

Welcome to the club! The factory glow plugs on the 2nd gen EcoDiesel last a good 200,000 miles. Some have been known to last 400,000 miles. However, the Gen 3 EcoDiesel uses a different glow plug. They don't last as long. Some have reported failures within 50,000 miles.

Can confirm failure rates. I have replaced 4 of 6 before 100000 miles. particularly #3 in the back by the turbo has gone out more than once for me. There is an easy ohm's check to confirm it's bad. Bottom line, If it throws a code for that, it is bad and replace it. Easy to do, 8MM deep socket and an extension can get to all of them. I keep an extra in the glove box since I have also learned remote start gets disabled when this occurs.

Thanks!

Any pics of the location/head of the glow plug to help ID?

So definitely not worth going though my extended warranty and potentially a deductible, just DIY?

Dealer wants a few hundred dollars to change one out. The part cost around that per at dealer price. Pick your poison. They are tuck down between the intake manifold and the valve covers beneath the fuel rails.

I just replaced my number 4 cylinder plug a few weeks ago. Just look for the little harness (circled in red). The picture above is for the driver side. The plugs/cylinders are numbered going from front to back= 1,2,3 are on the passenger side. And 4,5,6 are on the driver side. Yes the glow plugs are hard to find the first time (Put hair on it and turn the lights off, I could have found it right away!). The plug wires pull off just like a spark plug boot. I recommend putting brass high temp antiseize on the new ones going in (Threaded part only). Hope this helps.
