Clockspring failure in first day - related to CFW, ESC and Cruise failure as well?

So the first day of driving our new Overland Gladiator we hear a clicking sound when turning our steering wheel. It turns out to be a clockspring that needs replaced. Before making it into the dealer to have the clicking looked at, our Front Collision Warning (FCW) Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Cruise Control all stop working, each throwing a message that indicates they need serviced. Oddly, we also found on one of our first phone calls that the audio was alternating between the right and left speakers every few seconds. A rough first day with my first Jeep experience.

The dealership will now have my truck for 6 days while repairing the clockspring, but they’re saying they think the other issues are related (with exception of audio which they couldn’t replicate in the parking lot). I could understand if the cruise control was related because of the function of the clockspring, but has anybody else heard of this or know why a clockspring failure would impact FCW or ESC systems?

Thanks!

From my experience working a similar Toyota system, the FCW and ESC probably has a system status functional BIT (Built In Test) check it runs on the CAN bus with the cruise control switching as part of the BIT check. Since your clock spring is FUBAR, that adaptive cruise control switch is not showing and failing the BIT check and disabling both systems. Generally in electronics, we call this a "cascading error".

In my opinion, it is plausible.

Much appreciated! I just didn't want to find after waiting 6 more days to drive my brand new truck that they had just delayed tackling the other issues and I still had more delays ahead of me.

Yeah, that sucks and I would be bummed if it happened to me. I am 99% certain the FCW failed because of the clock spring and 75% certain the ECS failed because the FCW posted fail. Even though the ECS posted failed, I would bet you still have had a limited ECS function in an emergency, just that it would not take the FCW system into account in it's operation.

Let us know what happens and final outcome with the dealer. People like closure and it could help others in the future with any search of a like issue.

It makes sense. The FCW and ACC are fairly intertwined and a fault in one will disable the other as a fail safe. For the ESC, I'm not sure of the exact location of the steering angle sensor for the JL/JT but they're often integrated into the clock spring.

So now the dealer tells us they won't have our Gladiator repaired until Feb 19th! That means we drove it for less than 24 hours and it will be over 3 weeks in the shop. Great first impression. Feel like the Gladiator was a massive mistake.

My sympathies. Hopefully one day later this year you'll be able to chuckle about it with the top laid back.

You have every reason to be pissed but it is basically out of your control. Keep the faith and do not let it sour you to the core.

Systems will usually fail either early on (infant mortality) or late in life (worn/aging parts) - yes it sucks but this is what warranties are for. I had a new truck a while back and at 900 miles the power steering pump leaked and the climate control module died. Replaced under warranty and after that it was all good. Annoying yes and a bummer you had to experience the rough spots but should be good in the end. With the JT it's worth waiting for.

Update - it took 30 days to get the part(s) and then a couple days to tackle the issue, but it appears that changing the clockspring did fix all the remaining issues with the Gladiator- with the exception that we couldn’t recreate an issue we had with the front speakers....hopefully the clockspring fix is what corrected that as well, but we’ll only know if the issue never comes back.

Jeep worked with me and extended my warranty to make it right, so I feel like they made the situation right. Hopefully now I can get back to enjoying my new ride. First day with it and we unbolted the top and took it off-road. I’m now anxious to find some off-road trails in the Maryland / Va/ W VA area to go try out.
;-)

glad you got it fixed. I had the clockspring replaced in my 2016 JKU and it worked fine after that.
