Are you looking to buy a house or rent a house/apartment? Also, what field of work you are planning on going in?

It's California. We decriminalized most crime. It literally can't get worse than here.
Colorado is trying. 😁

But, from COS proper, various levels of wheeling are within an hours drive. As a state, Colorado offers a multitude of off-roading challenges.

Legal. Looking to buy. Right now we're looking at the west end near the Garden of the gods.

Idaho, but change your license plate immediately and never tell them you are from California. Best state in the union to off-road. My son lives there and he thinks its heaven.

I moved to Colorado Springs in 2003, a lot has changed since then. Just being straight, to many people moved to Colorado from California, and they have destroyed the state politically. The only reason I'm still here is my daughter is a junior in high school. When she leaves for college I plan to leave the state. Real estate prices have gone through the roof and so have the taxes, but coming from California, this may all seem normal to you.
As for the Jeeping, it is great, some of the best in the world. However, since 2003 we have lost 40% of our trails for various reasons and it is a constant battle to keep what we have which I fight everyday. Currently, Sen. Bennett and Hickenlooper are proposing more wilderness designations and more trail closing and they have friends with deep pockets and we have a handful of volunteers and no Hollywood celebrities writing us million dollar checks to help maintain our access to public lands.
On the upside, the weather is great, we almost have four seasons and it is so dry that even the coldest winter days aren't that bad. There are still a good number of 4x4 Clubs and shops around to help you get acquainted with the trails and we have every thing from mild to wild all within a 2 hour drive of COS. Aren't you glad you asked 😉

I understand there are differences in opinion regarding politics. I live in a red/purple part of a blue state, and have my fair share of frustrations with CA decision making. I will say the political winds here have shifted somewhat, after 12+ years of going hard in the paint to the left. Either things have moderated or I have grown less outraged; one or the other. But at the same time I'm not shy about saying I don't want to be in MAGA country. I would like a "leaning red/moderate" kind of place if such a thing even exists. My family is the opposite of religious, so we don't really blend in with any crowd. We like to keep to ourselves and believe good fences make good neighbors, so I'm not worried about making friends.

Coming from California, your real estate prices are cheap to us. (My 1600 sq ft house on no land is valued at 600k for some idiotic reason) Any tax in your state minus property tax is likely lower than here. I want to leave because the schools here are terrible and the only private schools are religious. More than a few of the kids in my kids' class don't speak English, and have commensurate reading/writing abilities. My kids are the only non-hispanic kids in their class, and as they grow older the cultural disparity is becoming a chasm. And just yesterday, I saw a guy smoking meth next to me on the sidewalk while I waited at a red light going to work. Once upon a time (2010-ish) I was pleading people to prison sentences for that, and now it's an open air drug den. The tough on crime, blue dog state I grew up with in the 90s is no longer in existance, and it's time to go somewhere else. We were also looking at Boise, but right now COS is #1 based on the "outdoorsy" marketing.

I'm looking for "tell it to me straight" thoughts here so I appreciate all the feedback.

Me personally I'm planning to move from Florida (tired of the insane humidity and no place to wheel that isn't mud or sand), but will be moving to a state like Arizona or Utah. I gave a few seconds thought to Colorado but with the political climate there (they are trying to turn it into California - where I grew up and loved), so that's out.

Just an FYI, the governor of CO was born and raised in Colorado. ;)

Back 45 years ago you had many freedoms in beautiful Colorado. My wife and I went back 7 years ago and a lot was closed off, or worse paved over. Seems many Californians moved to Colorado and well made changes.

Oh my friend you are so correct! Unfortunately so I might add. See I was stationed from 1973-1976, at Ft. Carson, CO. While I had the time of my life, doing so on $400/mo PFC pay was a challenge, so I never got to ski, but had a few trail bikes an old Army Jeep. We used to go tubing down a beautiful area in Deckers, dive off humongous rock formations into what we called “The Shutes” where the river flowed very fast where the rocks narrowed down to 10’! Float down the river for miles, then roll the huge truck tube back up the road, Rt67 I believe thumbing, where a pickup would always pick us up and bring us back up to our campsite. When I brought my wife back in 2007? That place was fenced off with no trespassing signs! I was heartbroken! Many areas we had fun were closed. One road, Rampart Range Rd. Is still open, but we found an old mine, we think was coal, that was so huge we could drive over 1/4 mile down! But that’s GONE, like gone! It’s very sad how both the beautiful landscape and freedoms have changed, all no doubt due to the liberal california influence!
