Working 4 tens is nice. I did that for a couple of years. I was offered 3 twelves for my last 10 years. That was almost like a part-time job.

I tried to retire back in 2014, but didn't quite do it. I was laid up after my second shoulder surgery for three months and dying of boredom. The service manager called me and asked me to come back, even if only part time. I said how much more money it would take and I would do two days a week. I did that for three years, then decided to do three days a week to cover the cost of vehicle related hobbies. I'm planning on trying full retirement again around the middle of next year.

Let me guess. "That's operator level maintenance". Man I can't count the number of times the Lockheed contractors I worked with used that line on some super technical stuff those of us with a TS clearance still didn't get the info on to actually fix things.

Sounds like the DoD civ side is super relaxed compared to my gig. I never even have a second to breath let alone take an actual brake.

But hold everyone up, with some power trip. Looking at you security. Nispom gets updated and you stop hold the entire line, to "update". But then put it on us Tech's to actually do the update, cus security (who'd ve' thought) doesn't understand any of the applications. Engineering ain't helping either, straight to voicemail everytime.

When I worked at the power plant. We worked a 12 hour shift. 6:30 to 6:30. Spent 1 month on days, 1 month on night. We called the schedule 5 & 2. 5 days on, 5 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off. You worked every other weekend. I worked every Tuesday and Wednesday. Off every Thursday and Friday. So one week I would work Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The following week. I would be off Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. One week would be 36 hrs. The next week would be 48 hrs. Have 8 hrs of OT built in to the pay. And I avg around 1,000 hrs of OT a years.

I'm looking to flip to data center work for similar working hours to what you stated. I keep bring up with my management if i can come work Fridays that I don't have anything planned and pick up an extra 8-10 hours a week. So far they aren't a fan of that.

Just be careful. I'm not as old as the other two but I'm old enough, and body is broken enough, to have realized much of my early days of life was spent far too much at work, and not enough making a life. You dont want to have regrets like that when your retired. A person can always make more money. But they can't make more time. Since turning 40 this past year, I've realized that mistake too late in life, concentrating on having a good paying and secure job to be able to afford for a life, a family, etc... but now being this age, with no wife, no kids, and not very good prospects at either, theres some regrets. I just caution you to not make the same mistake. I'm now trying to make up for lost time while possible before exposures to things kill me - a big reason for dumping so much $$ into the Gladiator, and there is no guarantee you will live old enough to even use that 401K. Granted being a combat vet is a whole different situation but still, several people I knew made a priority to make that family and those memories. Definitely perks to being single and 'free'. But there are a heck of a lot of drawbacks as well. But consider putting more energy into stuff outside of work, than just work. You never know when a person might have 2 brain surgeries that suddenly give you significant energy issues and you can no longer put extra energy to the 'life' things that you had planned on doing for so many years and now your essentially screwed yourself.

Just a word of wisdom to consider.

appreciate the advice. I got my my Glady despite being in my 20s and everyone calling me stupid, strictly because i believe tomorrow is not promised. I ride as well and have had far to many close calls to be taking anything for granted. I am married and I would like to give her the house she wants and everything else. I have plenty of free time and i waste none of it. But she approved my truck, mods, motorcycles, and everything else. She wants me to be happy and enjoy what i like. The only grandiose dreams she has a house entirely to herself and big a grand wedding redo (ours was basically shotgun and a courthouse). I don't wanna spare an expense when she left me have my cake. sure a house in this market makes a new glady look like chump change but I've got it sorted to a way i can swing it. A federal rural development loan and build it myself. I only save to cover her incase of my absence, I got a feeling I'll run out of luck before i ever see i dime of retirement saving, 401k, etc. She'll have it though. as long as i get a weekend or two every few months to get lost in God's country. That's good enough for me.
