I had the GM equivalent on my 87 GTA and they called it Posi-Traction. It positively allowed me to lose traction whenever I wanted and toss it sideways in glorious smoke billowing fashion.
I think about this scene way too much:

It positively allowed me to lose traction whenever I wanted and toss it sideways in glorious smoke billowing fashion.
And thus the reason for Cal-Trac bars on my car. When I punch it, I leave two nice J-shaped marks and go sideways. The caltracs force more weight against the differential helping to stop that. With an open diff I'd just spin one tire and go straight.
