you can register it as a passenger vehicle, but if you get pulled over hauling anything in the bed you’ll get a fine.
I think I'll just leave it as commercial for now. Wonder if my custom plates will be approved ;)

So Funny story... In Illinois, all pick up trucks and cargo vans are issued what is known as a B-Truck plate. The plate has a regular number and then B-Truck written vertically on the right side. As the owner, you can trade this plate for a specialty plate such as what you see for military service or other special interests. I chose the Prevent Violence option as I appreciate the message and a few dollars are contributed to causes that I believe in.

Here's the funny part... In classic Chicago fashion, there is a law that dates back to the 1800's forbidding commercial vehicles, which includes B-Truck vehicles, from operating on Lake Sure Drive. LSD is a designated parkway and was envisioned by the planners as a place for family communities to enjoy and commercial vehicles were prohibited. LSD has a 40 MPH speed limit, but most people run at 60+ MPH.

It is a beautiful landscape with tall apartment buildings on the west side and beautiful views of Lake Michigan. I love taking the roof panels off blasting the heat and my play list during my morning and evening drives between the city and home. All I had to do was change my license plates from B-Truck to Prevent Violence and I no longer risk getting a ticket.

About to put my plates on and I see my dmv registration says commercial vehicle. Is this because of the bed?
No, it's because you don't live in America.

I went to high school in Oklahoma where pickup trucks are either a "Farm Truck" or a "Commercial Truck". That's it. If you get Farm Truck plates, there are all kinds of restrictions. So, any pickup you actually want to drive and use regularly as a truck is a "Commercial Truck".

I grew up in SoCal; not far from Huntington Beach where the OP is. Back in the gas crunch days, you could buy gas only on certain days based on your license plate number. However, "Commercial" vehicles could buy gas on any day. Thus, California pickup truck drivers had a big advantage there since almost all of them were registered as "Commercial Vehicles". (Yeah, I'm really dating myself here, but I was a just a kid at the time.)

I'm pretty sure California also adds an extra tax if the truck is a 4x4.

Check your registration card. It might still have some mention on it.

On another note re: Pickups and registration... At one of my houses the local transfer facility (a.k.a. dump) does not allow pickups or van's without rear side windows into the dump. Doesn't matter if there are comm or passenger plates on it. What I hate about this is that if I need to drop off recycling or things that I do not want to bundle for the sanitation workers to pickup when they come during the week, I have to make a mess of another car.

I'm not surprised…

My story… In MA my Ram 3500 dually that pulls my 5th wheel ( I'm waiting for the 5th wheel on the gladiator ). MA has this lovely rule that if a vehicle has more than 5 wheels on the ground it has to be registered commercially. Well that means instead of paying $35 for 2 years of registration I pay $200 per YEAR as it is based of GVW. And since it's commercial instead of $35 a year for inspection I pay $135 since I need a commercial inspection.

At no point is this vehicle used commercially but.. welcome to the Republic..

I’ve appreciated the commercial plates on my current Toyota. Means I can usually find parking nearby - “Commercial vehicle parking” spots are yellow curbed and cars can’t park there until after 6 usually. But at 5:30, if it’s open, I’m soon in it.

The only way around having commercial plate a 1/2 to. Or smaller Pickup truck registered in Calif as a non commercial vehicle is to have a topper on the bed, and register it as a SUV. That said, take the topper off and get caught driving on the street and you may get a ticket. I always opted for a commercial plate on my trucks, as I was living in a San Francisco, and a commercial plate got you a good parking spots (lots of reserved delivery/commercial parking spots in parts of downtown and Fisherman’s wharf area where I worked). It used to be that you could license a pickup truck as non commercial, but then you could not haul anything in the bed, unless you had a bed topper on it. Several years ago, the rules changed, and all pickup trucks are licensed as commercial vehicles. This caught me by surprise also, when I tried to register my JT as a SUV non commercial vehicle.
Cheers

all of this bullshit and fees are the product of late capitalism. enjoy the ride, chief
That is not capitalism. Registering plates is controlled by one entity, the govt. Monopolistic, yes.

Moved from Illinois to CA. I drove my Raptor across and went to get it registered in CA. I knew about the commercial vehicle stuff, since Illinois was the same. I wasn’t prepared for the next six months of working with a clueless DMV, and having to get the truck weighed, etc. I never need the benefit of being able to park in a commercial loading zone, so I find every reason I can to do it.

NYS used to be, Pick-Up trucks over 5,000 lbs. you had to Register them Commercial unless you had back seats with seat belts then you could Register them as a Passenger Plate Vehicle.

I transferred my trade in a F-350 Super Duty Kept the Commercial Plates and transferred them.

Alabama they are personal. But the loophole is that if you own a certain amount of land, you can register it as a “farm truck” at half of what a personal vehicle cost.
