calif taxes are high but there are many states that have high taxes and reg. Calif is south of 2 of the worst. If ya don't like calif, move to Portland or Seattle.

$90 per year for the gladiator Rubicon because the gross weight of 6250 lbs. makes it a Class 2 truck. I think some lighter trims would be class 1.
$39 per year for the Wrangler, because it's considered a passenger vehicle.

I'm not complaining. But we make up for it with fuel taxes.

Silverado 1500 curb weights are roughly 4700-5600 depending on cab style and equipment.
Someone somewhere said "Jeeps are heavy" - hmmmm, not really. They are right in there with the rest of them.
GVWR for the Chevy 1500 is a lot higher than the Gladiator so I guess it would definitely be a class II.

Yeah, the fuel tax sometimes off-sets the actual license/registration fees and that sort of makes sense - if you do like my wife and register a vehicle and drive it 4,000 miles a year that 450/year fee seems just plain stupid. But then there's other factors in there, too - mpg, and other stuff.
Is there ever anything "fair" in the end? It's always going to poke someone wrong.

Yeah in PA, when I bought mine back in July '19, I had to get 'truck' plates and I also have to have the special window sticker that sits next to the inspection/emmissions stickers. BUT, I was still able to get a vanity plate, GLDI8OR with no issues so...I guess they do let some things slide.

the states with the high registration fees almost invariably that number also includes property/exise tax.

In CT you may only pay $100 for 2 years registration. But you will get wacked with $1200/yr property tax on a new Gladiator.

I believe that NH is pretty good. No sales tax. No property tax on vehicles and your registration will run you about $400/yr if I recall.

You pay a registration fee right up front in Iowa, 5%
They may call it a "one time registration fee" or even a "use tax" in some cases but it's technically it's only on the portion of the sale above and beyond the trade-in value which you have already paid the tax on and you pay that 5% one time.
Whatever they want to call it, the % is the same - 5.

From our own dept of revenue-
Description: The sales or lease price of vehicles subject to registration is exempt from sales tax. These vehicles are subject to a fee for new registration equal to 5% of the sales or lease price. This fee for new registration also applies when vehicles are sold between private individuals.

Fee for New Registration: 5% of the sales or lease price

Distribution of Funds: Road Use Tax Fund

That's a tax. No matter how they slice it. Ha. Its funny how they try to call it a fee.

Even the way they only calculate it on the amount above the trade it is exactly how most states calculate sales tax on a vehicle purchase.

There are technical differences. Words have meanings.

A tax has the primary purpose of raising revenue.
A fee recoups the cost of providing a service from a beneficiary.

Here in Wa State we have car/suv/van plates and different truck plates. I think we get charged some tonnage fee... will find out in 6 months when I re-register if I can stay in Wa that long

Its funny that you wrote that. I was about to say that exact thing but decided it was getting too off the topic.

The typical fee type charge is about $100/yr. or less.

Its safe to say that your first year registration "fee" is $2500, and then every renewal after that is $200. The first "fee" is made up largely of a tax. The rest are fees that cover the expense of administering the program that provides and manages vehicle registrations.

I received a notification stating I was coming due for registration on the jeep as well, Ca wanted $380, big fat nope. Sent papers to Wa where it’s registered by weight, got mine and the Mrs both reg for $290, that was weight tax, reg fee title fee and plate transfer, more reasonable in my mind, I looked at the Ca breakdown of fees it’s ridiculous:
$380? I just paid $700 for my '21 JTR. That stung a little bit.
