I'm not going to touch the bottom half of that.. We all have our opinions. But there is a big difference in personal and commercial. Fine you want to charge more then make the registration variable. Why should a honda civic pay as much as a minivan. But when you start classifying personal vehicles as commercial it has greater ramifications. States slaming us with loophole up charges is not the way to do it.

Lives in a grossly mismanaged state governed entirely by Democrats, moves to more grossly mismanaged state governed entirely by Democrats, complains about conservatives pointing out the same failures he's complaining about himself.

Alabama they are personal. But the loophole is that if you own a certain amount of land, you can register it as a “farm truck” at half of what a personal vehicle cost.
Used to have farm tags on all my trucks up until I moved to a new city... Now I just get Wildlife tags, so nobody knows I live in 29... :CWL::CWL::CWL:

Pick up trucks used to be able to have a regular non commercial registration, if being used for non commercial transportation, i.e have a camper on the back, or an empty bed. But as soon as you want to haul any cargo in the open bed, you need to have a commercial tag, or get a ticket for hauling a load with out commercial tags. You could but a camper shell/topper on the bed, and haul anything you want that way.

A few years back, they changed this, as more pickups, especially in the 1/2 to 3/4 ton range were being used to haul cargo, so California DMV changed the vehicle registration system, and all trucks, unless they had a permanent camper mounted in the frame (becoming a Class B camper, had to have commercial tags, regardless of how they were actually being used. But, this also allows you to park in commercial vehicle loading zones, which in a city like SanFrancisco is very handy. So I always had commercial plates on my trucks, to get the parking advantage, even though they had a topper shell on them.
Cheers

I’m not CHP, but if I remember correctly, if you do not have commercial plates on your truck in CA you can’t haul anything that is taller than the bed rails.

I'm in California. I got cool custom plates for my Gladiator and have been driving her around with nothing in the bed but a rack of bottled water. Friend enlightened me to the gotta-have-commercial-plates thing and I am BUMMED. Okay: I can deal.

BUT... I've ordered an A.R.E. cap for my Gladiator. Once it is on, do I have to have commercial plates?

I doubt that I'll ever take the cap off and I'd like to keep my custom plates...

Thoughts?

In NY all pickups used to require Commercial plates due to the fact that they were for commercial purposes (i.e. a utility vehicle used by a business). This was changed when pickups started being used as personal vehicles.

You still do need to register vehicles over a certain weight as Commercial (ex Ford Super Duty) which prohibits them from driving on State Parkways. These are highways that are not made to accommodate larger vehicles.
Yep I remember this. Had an 89 Chevy S10 P/U and this was an issue on Southern State Parkway.
Now half the vehicles on the parkway are pickups.

I don't think you do. A co worker was telling me about getting a cap to avoid having to have commercial plates.

There are two things that can make you avoid having to pay the commercial fees (weight fee on registration). 1) if you are disabled and eligible for permanent handicap plates (not just the placard), and 2) adding a camper shell with water and a toilet (counts as a home).

I know cause my mom told me she saved the family $450 by getting the plates. Of course she didn't tell dad since she spent the $450 at a craft store. Boy mom knew how to "scrimp and save."

I received a notification stating I was coming due for registration on the jeep as well, Ca wanted $380, big fat nope. Sent papers to Wa where it’s registered by weight, got mine and the Mrs both reg for $290, that was weight tax, reg fee title fee and plate transfer, more reasonable in my mind, I looked at the Ca breakdown of fees it’s ridiculous:
Current Registration
Current California Highway Patrol
Current Weight Fee
Current Vehicle License Fee
CurrentFingerprint ID Fee
Current Smog High Polluter Repair Fee
Original Smog Abatement
Alt Fuel/Tech Smog Fee
Current Abandoned Vehicle Fee
Current Air Quality Management District
Current San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District
Alt Fuel/Tech Reg Fee
Current Vehicle Theft/DUI
Current Transportation Improvement Fee
Reflectorized License Plate Fee

That just means California is smarter than states who dont charge more. Everyone Bashes California (especially the demographic in this jeep community online) but as usual, my reaction is, "oh boo hoo".

Trucks weigh more, and jeep owners constantly add more weight to their vehicles. and regular pickups add weight by hauling crap. California finds way to increase fees because these vehicle classes destroy roads faster. especially when braking and exerting all that force into the paved roads.

Ive been in Oregon two years, and their roads and infrastructure are terrible. and the people who complain about it most are conservatives, but even if the sate government and 1/2 of 1% of a tax on sales of new cars, this same crowd flips out. its the ultimate conservative dilemma. Wanting everything but not wanting to pay for it.
I don’t mind paying for infrastructure. I just want my money spent responsibly. Just google cal trans fraud. You’ll find plenty to ready. Take a look at what we spend on road signs, compared to the rest of the nation. I’ve spent my whole life in California. For what we pay in taxes and fees, our roads should be made of gold. Just maybe people have some valid points about continuing to throw more money at problems, that already have huge budgets. That’s not always the answer.

PS, this thread will be gone by the morning.

Don’t know about smarter, but they do def find a way to get more money, no it doesn’t go to the infrastructure, roads here are crap. Pot holes, cracks trash debris you name it. On top of that the wise az governor added a .51 cent per gallon tax on gas, in hell A gas is almost $8 a gallon, ain’t fixin shiz here. The added tax in part is to curb “climate change”.
I honestly wouldn’t mind a little higher price to fix the roads, but ain’t seen it happen yet. And that’s a drop in the bucket with the SIAP (self induced ass pain) goin on here.
Guess it depends on where you live in the state. I can drive from big sur to San diego and the roads are great. Same with going to big bear or yosemite. But I don't doubt the less popular areas get neglected.
For my travels, I've got to say our roads are awesome. Especially compared to when i visit the mid west where the winters wreak havoc. Seeing the cracked bridges out there gave me a better appreciation for funding infrastructure.

That’s good, yeah I’m sure a lot of it in any state is location location location, but where the asphalt ends it’s usually all smiles no matter where

I agree, I live in a rural area of northern CA and we have a number of big logging trucks using the local two-lane highways, like Hwy 1, Hwy 128 which floods every year, and others The county main roads and state highways here are maintained very well, and are a pleasure to use.
Cheers

Seriously? We pay close to $450 each for my JT and my wife's Grand Cherokee. That's almost 900 bucks to license 2 vehicles for a year, and some complain about 400 or less..........
