This might sound stupid to some but here goes. I just finished my second divorce and i got to keep the house. The housing market where I'm at is still good so I'm looking to sell my house and walk away with 60-70k. At the same time, interest rates are high and my ultimate goal is to build a house. Until then, I need housing once I sell. I won't be ready to build a house for at least another year, possibly 2.

I've thought about paying cash for a travel trailer and the ones I like are around 17k. Parking at a nice resort would be about 500 a month plus utilities. Ultimately, i want to keep costs low and have at least 150k saved up in the next couple years.

I have a fully loaded 2020 overland. Only 16k miles and I plan to keep it until I die. I've seen so many camping videos that I've been considering just forgoing the travel trailer and living in the truck. I work as a firefighter and I work a lot of hours. Minimum 120 hours a week and those are 24 hour shifts. It's not uncommon for me to go work for 8 days straight as I've done it a few times. When I'm at the station, I have access to shower, food, toilets etc. For those 2-3 days that I'm not working, i need a place to sleep. It just doesn't make sense to spend all that money on a trailer plus rent just to use it a couple days a week.

I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with living in a gladiator. Some advice would help. I've thought about getting a camper shell or backseat mattress but the options are overwhelming. Showering can be done at the station or at a gym. Cooking would be done on a small grill i can keep in the bed.

Also, I'm in Texas which means it's hot as fark. Sleeping during the day would be a no go. Our nights are in the 80s so i should be able to manage. If anyone knows of a small AC that I could use at night, that would help. I don't want to keep my engine running all night just to stay cool. Any advice would be appreciated.

Would house sitting be a possibility, at least part year in summer?

I had a boss retire to Arizona, but they go to Wyoming in the summer to avoid the Arizona heat.

I've never thought about that. I'll look into it. I'm in a big city so I'm sure there are opportunities.

I sympathize but sleeping in 80 degree weather (let's be honest, probably 90 some nights) is nearly impossible and if you have to work 24 hrs the next day...

No shame in renting something cheap until you can afford to build your house.

Also, as someone who's had his truck in the shop for 4 months now what will you do if something happens to it? You'll be out of a ride and a roof.

a buddy of mine built a plywood box that slides in the back of his truck that he sleeps in while hunting. he calls it the truck camper. has a door on the rear. he painted it and it actually looks decent and is water tight

Find an older couple, maybe through your religious organization, that you can rent a room from. Tell them your situation, what you need, and for how long. There's got to be someone who's willing to take you in.

This all day. Buy land and put a trailer on it til you can build your house.
You have a stressful and taxing job. Sleeping in 80 degree weather at best would drain you over time.

Not sure seems it would be difficult. Maybe you could buy the land for your house and get a pop up trailer to put on it until you build. Thanks for the job you do.

You can easily put a camper on your land and use it until you build. I wouldn't sleep in the truck on a regular basis. Bumper pull campers are really cheap. Put a metal awning over it and you will have less problems.

8 days straight? Jesus I would lose my mind I can barely do a 48 anymore lol where are you working that allows 8 days straight? they cap us here at 60 hours straight.

As far as living in the truck I think you would get tired of that sooner than later. I like your idea of a small camper.

I appreciate the replies. In my city, housing is expensive. A one bedroom in the hood is 1100. The nice areas start at 1500. Not to mention utilities. I'll look at cheap trailers as well as Airbnb's. The goal is to keep my living expenses low so I can save the max amount of money.
