So I've managed to address nearly all the issues put forth by the comptroller in terms of car seats fitting, adults fitting, adults fitting behind other adults and this is all well and good but there is the matter of the dogs and where they would go.

Right now for short no luggage hops they go in the back of my JKUR but if there is luggage involved they get shoved into the middle seat. With a corgi and a heeler they can kinda make that work.

So what does the group know about pickup beds and making dogs comfy?

My proposed solution is to crate them, install a softtopper or similar and get some carpet to quiet it down. Any other ideas or thoughts out there? I figure the dog window will serve its purpose and allow me to enjoy the crying and whining from the entire family.

The corgi is not crate trained but the heeler is. Problem is the heeler has not yet achieved her full woman body and I know the pair aren't going to fit hip to hip in the middle. When we dog travel we stop even more often than just for the kids who will be aging out of big clunky car seat and booster into a booster and a regular seat and then just regular seats, so time in the bed is not endless hours of suffering.

The comptroller wants to say something like a durango is the answer but I pointed out that with the 3rd row deployed the luggage space is even smaller. The ultimate solution obviously is a capped bed that's sound and temps deadened and an expo rack for all the stuff.

I'm in the same boat 'cept mine are an English Mastiff and a long coat GSD.

I could totally haul them in the back seat - BUT the Mastiff is drooly and I just don't want that in my beautiful new Gladiator.... and the Shepherd leaves mohair dust bunnies everywhere (y'all should see my house: LOL) and I don't want all that in my lovely new JT either.

What about a rack on the bed with a topper of some sort on that for shade... with dog webbing you see on Wranglers? But how to attach the webbing above the tailgate so I can get them in and out? And do they still need to be on a harness/lead in the bed?

Also have to strap the dog ramp (for my old Mastiff girl) into the bed somewhere...

I'm getting in on this because where to put my Shelby is the major issue stopping me from ordering a Gladiator right now!

I've got 2 kids (4 and 6) and a wife. In my JKU Shelbs goes in the back. My first thought was to put the 2 kids next to each other and then fold the "40" part of the seat up. With the cargo box removed the floor would be flat. Unfortunately, I don't think this area is big enough :-(

She's a 12 year old 70lb lab.

I assume that part about off-road was sarcasm. Haha

Yes, @avc8130 , I think your Lab might need more room than the 40/60 seat space.

Well, if you drive up around Stokes, yes, I imagine there are good places... but not IN Morristown...

Your asking the wrong Group ! Personally I would not be comfy in a crate . It's a known fact that dogs (according to humans) "like" being in a "Safe-Place," but my experience shows that works more for sleeping arrangements (long time ago) . You should be "asking" your Best Buddy -- he'll let you know what works and doesn't, unless he/she is a "momma's pup" ! A little Common Sense from Humans is a Plus . . . I say, if YOU think You'd be Comfy back their with the Mods, then chances are the Pup will too ! Good Luck, may the open breezes be with you . ;) . ps; they sure do love the open air experience - ever see a dog NOT want to stick its head out a window ? Those Dog Friendly Full Enclosure Nets seem to be "the trick," and when it's sleepy time (Summer only) then toss the doggy bed back their, or allow your Best Friend your company from the back seat (dogs pads are abundantly available too) . I LOVE dogs, but being an apartment dweller and past Navy dude I haven't had the desire to "torture" a Dog Friend with that (or me) . ;)
edit/ps; in one of the Overland Expo videos -- there is a company that has a bolt on 15 inch extension modification to the JKU and soon for the JLU, adds 50% more storage ! Hmm, sure would be a lot less expensive than a new JT AND it comes with a RTT built in similar to the Ursa Minor Build ( which does not extend the Wrangler !

The main issue at play here is demonstrating a means by which dogs and gear can be transported OTR to my usual offroading haunts. Once arrived and we are chewing dirt they would most likely be in the cab and lashed down with the children.

As previously stated, I'm thinking a crate in the bed, an expo-rack over the bed and cab and a soft topper tucking them all in with the luggage. Obviously sound good thermal and sound insulation of the bed and a chunky bed rug/mat ensemble to tie it all together. They stay cozy and can snooze the ride away and us humans can not be packed in lips to jowls/nose to tail.

Once camp is made its a very different scene as we all would pile into the tent and family life continues.

The comptroller needs to see existing and proven solutions using understood and mature technology as it were.
