Dumb Question on Diesel Cooldown

So the manual says to let the engine idle after driving with load to cool the turbo. With that (dumb question) is there a timer that can be set/installed aftermarket so you don't have to remember to shut it off. If not, is it okay to shut it off and immediately restart with the remote start so it shuts of automatically? I'm not even sure how long its okay to let it run or should if you run into the store in the winter?

What you are describing is called a turbo timer and keeps you engine running for X amount of time after you "shut down". Normally they have settings to change how long it runs. For your second question - I don't see why not. I doubt the 5-10 seconds it would take to jump out and start it again would be enough time to cook the oil in the turbo, but I'm not an engineer.

Honestly not that big a deal. Train yourself to give it 30 seconds after you put it in park. If you get done with a long haul of towing a trailer or something leave it running while you drop the trailer … if you just ran 80 miles an hr for while give it a min to cool you will get used to it

I don’t have the Jeep diesel, but have had several diesel SuperDuty’s. If I pull off the interstate after just doing 75 mph or so or towing, for fuel or rest stop, I will keep it running during the stop, even while refueling. That is only concern is stopping after being on interstate, local stuff I shut ‘er down.

I bought a Scan Gauge that plugs into the OBD port and allows you to monitor things that the dash just won't tell you. What I see is that turbo temperature after driving on the highway will fall to below 400F in 60 seconds or less after parking. If I've been driving around town, 30 seconds or less is all it needs to cool down.

The Scan Gauge is nice because you can actually see what's going on. You don't want to shut the engine off with a really hot turbo. That's how deposits begin to form on the internals of the turbo charger and in the long run it will shorten life of the components.

Watch EGT and get it down around 300-320F then shut it down

Turbo on the diesel JT is coolant and oil cooled, 30 seconds to a minute is all you should need if you have been using it with a heavy load.

Would be so easy to give us a gauge cluster in one of those useless screens... LOL

I always give the diesel 20-30 seconds before shutting down as long as I haven't been hitting that turbo hard in the last few miles or a regen just happened- then I err on the safer side and give it 2mins.
Seems like forever but once your used to it...

Rubicon does with the off-road pages. I dont think you can customize the screen tho. I just went out and played with the Banks idash and it has alot of options to monitor different systems, EGT is an option.

I get it if you have been using the diesel HARD it is wise to let it cool down before shutdown. Hopefully common sense.

But this is a modern vehicle. The average buyer of these vehicles are not as bright as most of you on these internet boards. I have to believe that the car manufacturers have "dumby-proofed" these vehicles. The coolant or oil pump still runs after shutdown.

I have a tight garage to pull into every tie I park it at home. Slowly creeping in is my cool down. When I park away from home I just try to consciously let it sit Before shutting it down. I think that’s good enough.
