I had tick/chatter on my 2021 Gladiator with 3.6L. It wasn't discernible at idle like yours, but clearly audible when revving the engine above 2500-3000 rpm.

I just picked up the vehicle from the dealership on Monday and the noise is gone. They replaced the left bank intake camshaft that clearly high lift lobe wear and all the intake cam followers on both banks. They also replaced the solenoids on the left bank but I don't believe that was necessary as it is not a stuck high lift issue. Dealerships are going to add parts to get their warranty money because that's what they do... I would have preferred they also replaced the right bank camshaft, but the mechanic said it looked fine.

Hopefully a TSB gets issued when they resolve the cause(s). I will make sure to get the corrected camshaft and followers installed.

Here is the noise in my vehicle before the fix:

I’m having the same issues that you’ve described or displayed in your video. Did you get a check engine light?

I took mine to my local dealership and they basically told me to keep driving it until it gets worse so that they can figure out the problem. Not sure how to force their hand for the repair.

No check engine light. But I have a close relationship with my local dealer which may be why they treat me well. Bought many cars from em.

Did you get a replacement vehicle from the dealer and was the buyback applied as a trade in?

I didn't have a CEL for this issue. It was just the obvious tick/chatter noise. I did have a P0304 cylinder 4 misfire one time in early September that did give me the CEL. The misfire was obvious as I was accelerating up a hill in Pittsburgh and had a momentary loss of power. After a few key cycles, the CEL went away. I checked the fault code history later and found the P0304 code saved.

About a month after the misfire, I started noticing the tick/chatter. Searching this forum, I thought it was possibly a manual transmission issue. After checking in neutral and revving the engine, I determined that it was most likely engine. Then determined that it was most likely valvetrain.

I'm not sure if the cylinder 4 misfire was just coincidence or the start of the cylinder 4 high lift lobe wear that is in my picture. It is possible they are related, but probably not because the code never repeated and I never had the same power loss like the one time in September.

If you have the tick noise, you want to get the repair as soon as possible. Driving with the lobe wear occurring is just sending metal debris through the engine which can cause much worse problems. You hope the filter and sump magnet catch all the debris, but it has to make it's way down there.

I'm a bit concerned with how much wear my cam lobe had and where that debris ended up. I just had an oil change in early October around when I started noticing the noise so hopefully the clean oil helped. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't give me new oil and a filter with the camshaft and follower replacement. I had about 1300 miles on this current oil during the repair. I will probably get an oil change soon so I can check the magnet for debris.

If your dealer won't try to diagnose the issue, I would just go to a different one. Waiting for a CEL is frankly bullshit. By then, the damage could be severe.

I appreciate the added detail/info. I just setup an appointment at a different service department but unfortunately they are booked until just after the new year. I’ll provide an update if this new place can diagnose the issue. Thanks!

Or at the minimum get it on record with the dealer so when it fails and they said “nah” you can hold them liable.

Finally have an update with the new dealership. Haven’t driven far but the issue seems to have been resolved.

Ouch. At the risk of sounding like I’m crapping on your STI purchase, I’ll sayyou just traded one problem for another. The EJ engine in that has a known history and is now known as a “glass engine”. They tuned that thing so poorly in recent years to meet emissions that it’s been burning up pistons. Hope you fare ok.

Not a Subaru hater here either. I had a Subaru Legacy with that engine before it was tuned for current emissions and it was a great engine……..back in 2005.

Well I just had to take my 2021 Gladiator into the dealer with lifter ticking at 2.5k-3.0k rpms. Dealer confirmed it was the lifters and they are working on it now. Only 13k miles on it.

Good luck and at least they've acknowledged the issue ! Hopefully you have a better experience than I had. My dealer didn't communicate often.
