I’ll be mounting a fifth Overland rim in the spare spot (and will follow a 5-wheel rotation schedule).

Is there any need to put some sort of cover or protective layer between the rim and the underside of the truck to protect the rim from damage?
It should be ok as is other than getting dirty under there, if you wheel hard the hitch will drag before the spare.

I was just thinking more about the finish on the rim rubbing up against the underside of the bed—the side of the wheel facing up.

If I use it for a 5-wheel rotation, I just want to make sure I’m not scratching up the rims every time one rotates into the spare slot.

Put a straight edge across your tire - if it doesn’t touch the rim you shouldn’t have to worry about it rubbing on the underside of the bed.
