I have a set of 5 JL wheels that i am using on my Glad. I have 35s mounted on them and want to carry one as a spare. The spare steel wheel has a much larger center bore than factory. Will it fit?

Yes, I have JL 33's. 35 is the largest you can put in the spare location.

My issue is i have aftermarket matching wheels 5 & the center hole is just a little too small to fit the spare keeper , so i may modify my bracket.

Just open up one end and use it like a cclip - i.e mount through center - slide securing plate across and tighten - the recess of the wheel will keep it centered. Could also use a shear pin.

Untrue... I have a bfg km2 37” under mine. Fits just fine... but it’s huge!

Had to modify mine as i had the same issue... mechanic took about 1/8 off each side of the bracket..... posted it a month ago about this potential issue with aftermarket rims.... FYI, all factory spare tire rims are 17" steel so if you don't swap the rim out, make sure you buy the correct tire size for your spare......

That doesn't make sense, the wheels are hub piloted, so at the very minimum the bore dimension has to be identical, are you saying there is some sort of conical stand off on the face of the wheel that keeps the bridge plate of the carrier from passing through?

If so crank the cable all the way out so you have some slack to work with and use a 4" angle grinder to "adjust" it dimensionally. If you don't have one $10 will buy you one at Harbor Fraught that will last long enough for that job.

The hole on my AEV Borah’s are probably about 1/8” smaller than the factory steel spare wheel , so yes i can grind down the width of the plate until it fits through or cut a notch so it could slide off the cable then install it on the outside of the rim. I have a 4” grinder & cut about 1/16 th of an inch off but ran out of time. I’ll get it done though thanks.

Thanks JCJeep1 for the advice i cut a slot on one side of the plate & slid it off the cable then installed it on the other side of the wheel. Easy peasy.

I’ll be mounting a fifth Overland rim in the spare spot (and will follow a 5-wheel rotation schedule).

Is there any need to put some sort of cover or protective layer between the rim and the underside of the truck to protect the rim from damage?
