I have an aluminum prototype 4.0 head would be fun to put on one of my 4.0s............it would reduce weight and increase power. A couple of the Eagle guys have put turbos on those engines in their cars. I also have a spare 4.0 here, but no car to put it in.

Combine it with making it a stroker. Iirc, the 4.6ls use a 4.2l head, but it could still be fun. You’re a mechanic, find an old YJ or TJ or something and have fun.

Cool!

Doesn't Edelbrock make a alum 4.0 head too? I was always thinking I'd try it on my TJ 4L when the time came, but with only 71k miles on the clock and my luck, that thing will run forever, and I'll never get to try it... :giggle:

Edelbrock did - and although they are still listed on some of the performance sites, no one can actually order one.
This one has taller valve cover rails for using performance roller rockers and other tweaks the Edelbrock head didn't have.

This is 1 of 3 prototypes by Clifford Research. I bought it at an AMC swap meet at the AMC Races event, still in the Clifford Research box. I contacted them and the fellow gave me the whole backstory on it.
They decided it was too much effort after finding that testing didn't yield the improvements where they wanted them and ended up selling the design - possibly to to Edelbrock according to some.
We don't know where the 3rd one ended up, but there's another that a guy in the Jeep forum found on the 4.0 of a Jeep he had bought to part.
I figured for $500 I couldn't go wrong, even if just to have a cool part of history. I have 3 4.0 engines, one in my SX4, another in the 04 WJ I bought from Dad's estate, and one in a car I'm parting and scrapping.
And who knows, there's a 48 or so Willys truck in the neighborhood if I can talk the farmer into parting with it. My neighbor said that truck looks a whole lot like my truck so was looking into it for me.
