First Service at Dealer Experience

well I was going to wait till about 5000 miles on first service but decided today was the day at 3500 miles just to be on safe side. I’m old school and just couldn’t wait any longer. Brought in no appointment in express line. Advisor asked if I was waiting for it and I said yes. I really expected maybe up to an hour on a Friday Afternoon ? Went out in the lot to look at Jeep inventory for maybe 10 minutes max and came back in. Went to parts department for maybe 5 minutes and then walked into waiting room and met advisor looking for me. Your all done and Jeep is out front. Maybe 15 minutes at most. I marked wheel before coming for this. Yes tires were rotated. Looking at paper work I see 6 quarts of 68522999AA, oil filter 68191349AC. I am like crap they over filled it. So went back in to advisor and told her it only takes 5. She looks on computer sort of and says probably type error ? I drive around corner winds blowing like crazy trying to blow hood back against wind shield. Good the hood rod sort of locks in. I really can’t tell if it’s over full or not ? Flat end of oil stick you can see easy but cable part above not so much ? I think it’s fine but I will recheck when I get home ? They supposedly checked all fluids ? They did fill wind shield washer a little Ithink ? Reset oil gauge. There was no oil mess any where. They must be like a pit crew ? Home now in garage and will check oil level again in a few minutes?

Not all dealers are terrible like so many say here. I usually have no issues. The last change I was there about an hour. The paperwork always says six quarts, but mine is always at the proper fill level.

Just because the paperwork says 6 doesn't mean 6 were put in. It rounds up. 5¼ quarts for example will still be documented as 6. Good to check, yes, but don't freak out at the paperwork number.

Other than that, I think you're saying it was all good?

Well I drained a quart out and it still read over full. Then I drained almost another quart and it still read full. Started motor for a minute and shut off. Checked immediately after shutting off and it barely read on stick. Waited a few minutes and kept checking went up to about 1/2 way between cross hatch. This Jeep must have baffles in oil pan or something ? Any way I ended up putting the second quart back in. its now readin just above the hatch marks maybe a an 1/8 inch. So I would say it had 6 quarts in it. I’ll call service manager Monday.

You need to let it sit for maybe ten minutes and check the oil level.
If all of the oil stayed in the pan when the engine is running you wouldn't need oil.
It takes a few minutes for it to settle back in the pan after the engine is turned off.

Ya I know about letting it drain down. I just wanted to see how quickly it would drain down. The part that I don’t get is why the level on the dip stick didn’t change when checking it after taking almost 2 quarts out till I started It up and then let it drain down again How ever It was a quart overfilled. Warmed up to operating temp and let it drain down a couple times to make sure and it’s perfect now.

I have the hardest time reading the oil on mine. I've let it sit for over an hour and it still wouldn't register on the dip stick. I've also checked it within five minutes of shutting down and it would read full.

Just got my first oil change done. After reading about the oil over fill issue I did the same thing and checked on the parking lot before I left but wasn’t 100%. Checked in the morning and it was way over filled. The next day at lunch I did what the manual says and let it warm up, shut it down, wait 5 mins and then check it. Still over filled. Called dealer they got me in as soon as I got off work and had their head tech check that it was around .5-1 quart high and that it would be fine but if it made me feel better they would take some out. I got some taken out and checked when I got home and it is now perfect.

I understand wanting to use any free service that has been provided, but if you have to go through wondering if too much oil was put in and then draining some out, then putting some back in, then IMO you are better off just doing the oil change correctly yourself.
