The high idle is not. Problem. Actually if you shift it when it is at a higher idle warming up, there will he less of a clunk. The clunk is cause by a feature called "reserved torque" in the programming. There is a setting for how much torque is made available when shifting into reverse or drive. The table is setup to have lower torque available at higher rpm in colder temps, and as the rpm slows down the torque numbers get larger. I have reduced these numbers on my jeep, but it had to be done in iterative steps. If set to low the idle becomes unstable, or the vehicle will not come out of park. My guess is they set these numbers and then made changes to the torque and throttle models and now it is a bit forcefull in some conditions going into gear. My Gladiator used to really slam into gear, now it just clicks in.

Anyone still having this issue or had it resolved? Have a 2020 (19K miles) just turned a year old throwing a CEL. Just put a 2in Mopar lift and 35in tires on her. She was heading into shop to get MPH reset and the CEL lit on the way in. You can only hear a thud it when we put her in reverse or drive but only after being in park for a while. Had a few Jeeps and I didn’t think anything of it. They always sound a little loud on the gear change after start up so hoping the CEL was something more simple…

She goes in tomorrow morning for a look at it (dealership is awesome) we are moving overseas and traveling to FL this weekend to drop off the Jeep for transport and then this happens.
I have this issue. I need to get it addressed as it seems to be getting worse. It does it in drive and reverse. Otherwise, my eight speed is butter smooth.

Mine has been at the dealership for a few days with this issue. Jumping/jolting/thudding when shifting from Park to Reverse. Worse in the AM, but happens throughout the day. Also when driving, sometimes I get a hiccup around 20-25mph which feels like the Jeep has to "catch up" to shifting gears.

Talked to the mechanic over the case & they said they've opened up a special case with Chrysler regarding the issue. Seems to be tranny issues & under the powertrain warranty.

Thinking I'll need a tranny replacement in the end. I reached out to JeepCares & they're talking to the dealership. Authorized me a loaner in the meantime, so I'm assuming it'll take a minute to fix.

Blah.

How many miles do you have on the Jeep? Did it gradually and incrementally got worse over time?

My garage has a slight incline. To avoid the clunk, I put it in Neutral and pull the parking brake first before shifting it to Park.

Yeah, I've done a good bit of research regarding this issue & it seems like it's ongoing. Googling it even brought up some issues on a Wrangler as well as a Grand Cherokee years back although I'm sure it happens with other vehicles.

I'm not really the type to accept that everything is chocked up to be "a Jeep thing." It was happening too often & too aggressively for my liking even though I did what others recommended (i.e. don't park on inclines, shift into Neutral first then into Reverse, set the parking break each time, etc). Too expensive of a vehicle to not do something about it, especially under warranty.

Hopefully this will get fixed in a timely manner!

Not sure if this helps but... i too have noticed it. In my opinion, it is the ā€œparking pawlā€ releasing from the park position and allowing movement of the vehicle. If u park on any incline at all or there is any movement in the vehicle after it is place into park, then one can assume it would bind slightly. Old school transmissions used a mechanically moved rod that would engage with a slot that would then ā€œlockā€ or ā€œparkā€ the transmission from moving. I am not savvy to the newer transmissions and how they go into the park mode and prevent movement of the vehicle. I can assume and guess that an electric solenoid has a play in that function especially for the ā€œauto parkā€ feature. Just m2c.
I agree with the parking pawl. I have the Diesel engine. When I shift into park, the torque of the motor loads the drivetrain and suspension.

So, a quick update.

Dropped off my Jeep almost a month and a half ago and contacted JeepCares immediately after I dropped it off to open up a case. Fast-forward to today, the dealership has not been able to render a proper diagnosis as to the cause of the issue, when parts will be ordered, or an ETA on when the issue will be resolved. For the past two and a half weeks, the most they have done (to my knowledge) was check to see if the center supports were modified, check pinion angles, & send over pictures of fluids to the engineering group at Chrysler. According to the dealership’s service writer, he has been waiting on the next course of action from the engineering group since September 2nd. I was unable to receive an answer as to when or how often the dealership and engineering group discuss information regarding my vehicle. It also seems as though I am receiving conflicting or delayed results when talking to the dealership or JeepCares. Their stories don’t seem to be matching up effectively, especially when talking to the service writer on the phone. The latest from JeepCares -

"Good afternoon,

I've reached out for an update, I was advised the lift kit with tires is causing a major problem in diagnosing this type of repair. They deal with vehicles that are in factory specs and this one no longer is which is why it's taking an extended period of time to gather information and do tests on the vehicle to fully diagnose. I will reach back out for an update once I receive one."

I have a 2020 JTR with 39K miles. 3.5" Clayton Overland Plus with 37" NRG and Falcon shocks. Issue was known/documented by dealership prior to lift installation.

Talking to JeepCares, they have ā€œapprovedā€ me for a rental every 10 days at my expense with delayed reimbursement when the maintenance is completely finished. According to my local Enterprise, that would be $909 each 10 day period with their current vehicles including fees. Due to this being an already one month issue with no proper diagnosis given or any sense of urgency on behalf of the dealership or engineering group, I am unsure as to how long this issue will take to be resolved. I do not have the funds to continue to rent a vehicle out of pocket every ten days in the hopes that, one, things are being solved in a timely manner or, two, I will get financially reimbursed in a timely manner. I cannot adequately understand that, if JeepCares or the dealership is going to pay for a rental anyways after maintenance is completed, why not set me up with something at the start? I get that they don't "owe" me a rental/loaner & JeepCares is doing this as a courtesy, but it's definitely inconvenient.

I have reached out to FCA Corporate at this point.

What ended up being your issue? It sounds similar to mine.
