Thought I'd chime in as I am waiting for the Gladiator that is replacing my Rivian to be delivered. It's a very, very capable truck (the rivian). I was most impressed by it in off-road mode at the second highest ride height. For typical beaten down old fire road type stuff and/or run down power line trails its the smoothest thing I've ever owned (landcruiser 100 gets 2nd, disco 2 gets third). Certainly more capable than anything made with an abs based traction control system and in the future as capable (through software updates) as a Rubicon JL (I say JL because it has a much shorter bed than the JTs, which I dragged everywhere) or sas bronco in stock form. Then on road, I have owned a JT and JL before and the Rivian drives much, much better. Its is incredibly smooth on road, piles and piles of power, has one pedal driving (not for everyone, but I love it), has a relatively advanced driver assist system for highway driving, and feels much closer to a car in handling than a big JL or JT. With that said, it suffers in one department; range. In decent weather its tolerable at around 275 miles @ 80mph, but in winter its way down, I get about 200 miles from 100% in all-purpose mode. That's the driving force bringing me back to a JT, but I am going to miss the Rivian in a lot of ways.

not to sound like a jerk here but how in the world can you say ’in the future as capable as a rubicon JL’. none of them have a solid front axle, or lockers, or disconnects - its impossible to have a truly valid side by side comparison when two vehicles have completely different suspension systems and are designed and built for totally different uses. Can a Rivian fit a 35” tire stock with no modifications? Plenty of off road videos clearly show its no where near as capable. And the continued argument about range is huge! How can a Rivian compete with a Jeep when it cant even get the same range as a JT and then needs hours to recharge which is just not possible in remote areas. If its such an amazing vehicle then why are you trading it for a Gladiator? I mean. That right there says it all IMO. Thats not to say that rivian isnt a neat truck. Its just not really a valid comparison.

You just sound like you dont know anything about the rivian. It comes stock with 34s (bigger than anything jeep offers) and it does not need solid axles with lockers as it has a motor at ever corner that can simulate lockers with software. It doesn't do it perfectly yet, which is why I said it will be as capable one day, but not today.

I’m in the expensive northeast but am seeing used Rivian R1T for low $70s. Here’s a link to one with 6,000 miles for $72,000. When you compare what you get vs a Gladiator (400 miles all electric, towing of 11,000 pounds, bigger tires and higher clearance, way fancier inside, quiet cab, etc.), you start to notice even more just how overpriced and outdated the JT is now and will be in a couple years. Any retained value history will go down much faster than the old days. I’ve owned 2 Wranglers and a Cherokee, and love Jeeps for what they represent and can do, but I also don’t like paying more for a flip phone when everyone else is getting iPhones and Samsungs with roll-up glass. I know, I know, many of you guys are a hundred miles from appropriate charging, or go for days at a time, and have preferences for ICE etc., but where I’m at, I can drive for 3 hours in any direction and be in a populated area 10min from a chain Panera or something similar (gross right?).

So as I consider a finger crossing 4xe gladiator for probably $80k in a year or more, vs a “for me and my needs, more capable, more future proofed, more environmentally friendly” (battery development and disposal an obvious asterisk), today for $10k less, it really becomes a consideration. They come in better colors, too, to my eyes.

Buying used is the only way a gladiator, in this person’s comparison, makes sense. $30k for some with decent miles— I’d never break even on the $40k gap with electric savings or residual equity, and if I “truly” cared about carbon etc I could buy carbon credits for the miles I drove for way less also. That seems the smartest thing, knowing the value will drop even if they don’t make it anymore because in 10years no one will want a 13 year old truck that gets 15mpg and tows 8,000 pounds less while also going 0-60 in seconds longer.

Come on, Jeep, price it better.
