Are gps units necessary anymore? With all the apps on phones or even on the screen in the jeep, why would I need a gps unit? Does it hold some maps or other info I can’t get through uconnect?
The factory UConnect/NAV system offered by RAM and Jeep is about useless, full of errors and oddities. Like the display will show one thing and the voice prompt is directing you to do something else. I use my phone and the Android Auto connection to send my Trails Offroad to my display and that works so much better.

You (consumers/society - in general) need something else (in the truck) other than ‘cell related’ GPS. The obvious reasons…. No cell signal.
Not only that….. some folks don’t have (or don’t want )smart phones for the extra expense or lack of know-how. My newly retired brother still has a dumb phone.

With ‘Big Brother’ watching all of us (Uconnect/Sirius, Onstar), all the time - it’s unlikely the OEM Navigation/GPS would go away. The technology & structure Is there….. They’ll continue to offer OEM Navigation to make more $$.

Granted, I don’t know how any of it works (in terms of Uconnect GPS systems)…. I’m guessing it’s Satellite.

In the far far future…. I mean, how long with Cell technology last? Everyone will have Satellite phones. There’d be the Carplay equivalent for Satellite phones.
At that point…. The OEM Navigation (as we know it today) wouldn’t exist because we’d be using (and connecting with) their own Satellite technology (Uconnect, etc).

Ok…. It’s Monday and I think I just dove off the deep end. 🤪
My neighbor has been all over the country with his 49 Ford. He has a flip phone, and can't receive or send text messages. It's the same for a number of people I know. They still will use maps and/or GPS.

Never had that happen before - but it does sometimes take you through places that aren't correct.
The 24s - it's a whole lot better TomTom, far better nav system

So which unit would be better for backroads, trails, and such. I’m not using it for hunting, just riding roads less traveled by society.Garmin? TomTom? Something else?

It’s been a very long time since I bought an aftermarket GPS setup.

……riding roads less traveled by society…… Are they public roads? If they’re not public roads (listed on a map or in google- per say), they probably won’t be in an aftermarket GPS maps.

There’s probably another App for those types of roads/trails.

Just make sure you have the ability to download updated maps freely and easily (thru your home computer or even wifi/bluetooth).

For those sorts of places you would be best off using something like Gaia or OnX with maps saved for offline use.

At least, that's what I do anyway.

Garmin has this if you have $1,000 you don't want:

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1623137/pn/010-03021-00/#maps

If I am road tripping and I know I am going through area of known poor service, I save sections of Google maps for offline use as well. I did that mostly when going out west.

You pack a Starlink mini and a power supply with you when hiking, biking, dirt bike? I don't have room for all that when a Garmin fits in a pocket and holds a charge for up to a month.
Leave the starlink in the jeep and download your offline maps when you figure out where you're going.

GPS devices need to be prepared with maps also. Starlink gives you access to a whole world of knowledge.

GPS devices come pre loaded, you'll only need to install maps if your'e in a different part of the world.

Starlink isn't anything special, it's just Internet, the same "world of knowledge" we have had access to for decades.

Maps need to be updated and a disconnected device is irritating to update. Usually requires downloading files to an SD card and installing from the memory card. That's why the GPS system in your car is terrible and unreliable after a couple years, and auto mfgs are moving to Android Auto/Apple Carplay.

Exactly, starlink gives you access to the world wide web in places where you can't even get cell service.. so there's zero reason to not download your offline maps. How long do you procrastinate your survival preparedness?

I have a Zoleo device for emergencies but never use it for messaging or GPS anymore because having a starlink mini is far superior.

Really? I connect mine to my PC with a USB cable, use the app on the PC and update my maps. Piece of cake.

You don't have a 2024 or later, I guess.

Starlink - either 50/month (for limited data) or 165/month (for unlimited data)
Not dissing Starlink at all - just saying, there's a monthly fee.

Yeah to each their own, whatever works best for you. A 2024-later is less than a couple years old, so just wait for it. Dealer map updates aren't free. I don't use the in-dash GPS system in any of my cars. My Mercedes doesn't even have a native GPS, because it fully depends on Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. The GPS maps in my Audi doesn't even have my house on it. lol

I'm just sick of everything needing to be plugged in and/or charged and if I can avoid it, I'm willing to spend big bucks to consolidate.

Off-topic example, I keep bugging my Streamlight rep to reproduce their lanterns with USB-C chargers. I'll replace all of mine tomorrow just to get rid of their charging brick... I just love their lanterns for the super low output red light, perfect for reloading under NODs.

Starlink is a lifesaver for working on the road (me or my wife) and entertaining a toddler. Has infinite uses beyond that. Emergency alerts for weather or wildfire, for example.. Those come in just like normal with a wifi connection.

My last trip (3 weeks outdoors) I never even downloaded a map because I had access to live maps everywhere.

Yeah, but then people can actually reach me. Can't have that. I see your point though, lol.
lol fair point.

I don't. I always know where I'm going, have all the maps I need, and carry an emergency beacon as a backup to my phone and watch. Starlink isn't going to save you unless you're sitting at your camp site. Mobile satellite internet has been around for decades, Starlink just increased the bandwidth enough so you can binge watch Netflix while you're "roughing it" in the wilderness.

Mobile sat phones have been unaffordable for decades, is what you meant to say. ;)

And you can use Starlink any way you choose to. It's only $5/month for unlimited "standby mode" which will give you enough bandwidth to text and wifi call (capped at 500Kbps) .. You could even download maps with that.

My starlink mini runs 24/7 on top of the Jeep.

Sounds like your process is sorted out sufficiently for your needs.

Enjoy the outdoors how you want to. We only hate the people that don't pack out their trash.
