Halogen DRL issue

well i just got back from my annual inspection and failed due to an issue with my daytime running lights. I have the 2 bulb halogen DRLs, where each fender had a separate turn signal bulb, and a DRL bulb. The issue is that when the headlights are off, both DRLs light up with no issue. But when i turn my headlights on one DRL bulb goes dim like it’s supposed to, but the driver side one just goes out entirely. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this? I figure it shouldn’t be the bulb itself since it does light up when the headlights are off.

I don't have the halogen setup but i think it might be a dual filaments bulb and the low output filament is burnt out.

Sounds like the most likely issue here. I have halogens with DRL, but when one of mine went out, both filaments went.

Alright awesome, i figured it was probably the bulb but the guy at the shop said he was “pretty sure the single light DRLs are dual filament and the dual light DRLs are single filament”. And that it’s probably an issue with the relay. Only reason i asked on here is because i went out of town right after the inspection so couldn’t just test it myself

I have the dual bulb DRL aka DRL/Turn with halogen, and the DRL bulb (7443) is "high" when DRL (in radio) in enabled, and when you're running parking lights/headlights ON (not auto) and have the DRL function turned off (in radio) they will be "low". At least that's what mine did last night when I checked.

Florida at the state level may not have annual inspections, but the DOT laws still apply. Granted the DOT probably won't bother you for DRLs, since they're primarily interested in truckers on the highway.

Maybe the OP just wants to be safe and visible....iunno.

I don’t live in florida anymore i just never updated this account. Where i live had annual vehicle inspections and my truck failed because of the DRL

Pretty easy to change your location in account details. Saves the confusion should location be a thing in the future.

Have you checking into the laws regarding DRLs where you live now? Wouldn't be the first time an inspector got overzealous and failed a vehicle for something that wasn't required. If they insist on failing you, they should be able to cite the specific requirement in the law or regulation that caused you to fail.

Don’t really think it matters that much when i was just trying to figure out what the issue with the jeep could be. Didn’t think people would focus this much on the inspection requirements of where i may or may not live

I focused on inspection requirements because I felt it would be helpful to know that your vehicle cannot fail an inspection for equipment that is not required (nor prohibited) by law. That's not to say I don't believe you should fix the problem, but in the meantime while you're figuring it out that you should have legal recourse to getting a passing inspection to keep your vehicle on the road.

Only true if there is law or regulation where you live stating that as fact. Federal DOT does not state that.
