Has anyone kept their stock tires (33’s/Mojave/Rubicon etc) and swapped them on new wheels?

So….I want new wheels but don’t want to buy new tires. 2024 Mojave with 33’s (285/70R17).
From what I understand (from research) my specs are 5” on 5” bolt pattern, Rims aer 7” wide, and +45 offset (Please correct me if I’m wrong).
In Pennsylvania - Poke it illegal. It’s rare to get pulled over… I’d rather avoid the opportunity (and I want to pass yearly inspections).
And no…I will not put fender extentions on (they look hidious)😉.

I’ve searched around looking at various wheels…..but am extremely limited in what’s available.
If anything - I should be able to go with 8” wide rims without any issues - other than, needing slightly larger offset to keep the wheels under the fender. 1/2” extra offset?

I’m totally new to this ‘wheel’ thing and poking around reading….but I could be way out of the ball park.
Ya’ll are the wheel experts.

Is it that difficult to find close-to stock replacement rims in the color/style you like?

Unfortunately I can't give you any smart advise.

But living in a country where "poke is illegal" too, I decided to stay with the original wheel set up.

Boring but gladly I am in an age to cope with that ...

OK, at least I have another car with some very light illegal poke as an alternative ...

Be aware that moving the centerline of the tire out may change handling........... and necessitate a change in toe. it all depends on what you do.
If you keep the centerline of the tire where it is in relationship to the face of the hub, you'll be taking less risk.

You're gonna move the inside sidewall of the tire closer to the frame rails if you go wider wheels but similar offset to avoid "poke".

+ offset = mounting/hub surface closer to outside of wheel
0 offset = mounting/hub surface dead center of wheel
- offset = mounting/hub surface closer to inside of wheel.

So a negative or zero offset is out of the question. You need to stick with a very high positive offset and similar width to keep poke under control and your inner rub potential under control.

This image is from another thread ( check the inside of your wheel well ). My limited understanding of offsets, is that for an 8” or 9” rim, assuming same tire height, that you would want a lower offset ( maybe between 28 and 18 )

also, lookup scrub radius

lastly, there are online offset calculators that also provide before/after visuals with measurements.

Pretty good looking TJ! I’ve always liked those style of wheels on the TJ’s.

I put on some 17x8 with 0 offset wheels with 285/70/17 wiledpeaks and they had a little over 1/2 in poke, probably not enough to get pulled over for but they dont check that here. They drove fine but i did replace them with mojave wheels +37 and felt they drove better, could have been scrub radius or could have been all in my mind.. i do know the bigger tires the scrub radius is less of an issue.. i think a +20 offset would be about perfect… and thats the route im going when these tires wear out and i go 315s… whatever you get make sure they are hub-centric…

You can always put on the OEM flares and eliminate *mild* ”poke”.

How would that be? Bigger tires tend to have more rolling resistance and will want to pull back harder against the steering linkage.
It's a combination of factors........... if you change tire diameter, it changes scrub - if you change wheels, it can change it, you can correct it and get it back to snuff using the right combination of tires and wheels.

I might just have to take a wheel off to see the specs…. The information you read online varies. I‘ll stick with a 7 or 8” wheel.

But as someone already said…the choices can be pretty boring. I was shooting for next year to do this, so I’ve got plenty of time to search!! 👀😉

Nice! We had a couple built YJ’s over the years. Fun memories for sure!

If we had more garage space, we’d have more toys. The 3rd garage bay has a bass boat in it. ☺ I work from home, so the JT isn’t really a daily driver but I don’t want any headaches during yearly inspections. But, we’ll see where my searches take me.
