I’m kicking around the idea of upgrading the factory sub enclosure with a JL sub and amp. Anyone tried this?

I wouldn't do that. Subs have specific requirements to work correctly and not fail. Also the factory enclosure is plastic and limited to the low power amp the Alpine "upgrade" offers.

Probably way more than you want to do, but something to ponder long term:

The Audio Control amp is a great way to go with the factory head units and can stay if you were to change out that as well.

That’s an awesome build! I had not seen that one before. Whatever I come up with will need to fit behind the factory plastic piece. I would like to still retain the oem appearance. As far as the oem box you are right it is flimsy. If I end up using it im going to cut it in two pieces then fiberglass reinforce the inside. Put it back together then fiberglass the sides. Whatever internal air space Is left I will match up to the sub.
