Doing a six-month consulting assignment for my friends at Virginia Tech. That means busy days a free weekends in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Tips on any and all must-wheel areas are very welcome. I plan to hit as many trails as possible before fate tosses me somewhere else.

Hey John, not sure how far you'll be from Flagpole Knob, but that was an an awesome trip and the view was spectacular. We took the route from the Union Springs side (the harder side they say) and it was awesome, especially since I towed my trailer up to the top.

I'll put it at the top of the to-run list. I'm hoping to get over to W.Va., Tenn. and Kentucky too.

My brother just did trail 51 @ WindRock TN, and he loved it.

John,

In VA, Pott's mountain Jeep trail is close to Blacksburg and is very challenging, there is a rock garden in the middle that can be very technical. I have done a run in the spring there the last two years Pott's Mountain. Flag Pole Knob like mentioned above. Peter's Mill run is a couple hours north, very easy badge trail. Bald Mountain Jeep trail is fun, but the mud holes can be DEEP.

You can also hit Uwharrie in NC which is about 3 hours from Blacksburg and is a fun trail system. WindRock in TN is a bit further but worth the drive.

Thanks for the intel. I did Peters Mill a while back, and loved a long day solo in Uwharrie back in October. The rest are all new, and I’m definitely game. One of the reasons I took this temporary gig is to be in the heart of East Coast Jeep country, and I plan on taking full advantage!

As was mentioned Potts is a good trail. We were up there Monday on alot of the FS roads and a few trails. Was going to hit Potts but was 3PM and didn't want to finish in dark. Smoke was crazy but still a good day in the mountains.

On the ground here now, and the place looks great. I'll enjoy this gig, just for the weekends.

Does anyone know if there are any good Jeep clubs rolling in the neighborhood?

Go up 460 to the VA/WVA state line. You have Kairos Resort which has a bunch of decent trails that a Gladiator will have fun on, although I would NOT recommend White Whale.

North of there up in Canvas, WVA is The Good Evening Ranch. That is some of the best wheeling on the east coast. It's not huge but there is so much packed into it. It's well worth the trip.

Excellent! I’ll get up there before this gig is done. Thanks.

Hey John I'm 8n Strasburg just north 0f Winchester if your heading up give a shout out I'm looking to find some places to go in the Shenandoah valley and would enjoy wheeling with another Gladiator. Also see your from Ithaca. I hear it's gorges. I'm originally from Rochester.

@John in the Woods I'm in the Front Royal VA area. (Not sure if you remember me, but I met you during a Peters Mill trip last year) If you ever want to do Flagpole via Union Springs one Saturday let me know, go there often!
