I'm not a shill or anything for HF but they do have the Apex 12000 this week on their "Spring Black Friday Sale" for $479. It may be even less with their credit card offer. I know a lot of people here have them and I have one on my JTR. I am very pleased with mine, especially at the price.

You do have to shell out $29.99 to join the inside track club to get that price.

You may be correct. The ad is a bit vague when it says the inside track club people get the first dibs on the merchandise on Mon-Thur and everyone else gets it on Fri-Sun. But when looking at the ad, it just shows the price for inside track club members.

In any case, if you do any other shopping there at HF, the membership does pay for itself quite fast. If the winch is the only thing you buy there, then even with the $30 club price you still get the winch for $510. Still a really good deal, IMO.

Yes, but the wire rope version is also on sale too.
If it is, it should be at least like $100 less. I have seen that for like $399 not that long ago. But isn't synthetic rope much better and safer? I remember many years ago when I was in my teens pulling a dune bike with a small winch onto a trailer and the ''rope" broke. Part of it wacked against my head (maybe why I am screwed up today). But when synthetic rope began to be used, I was happier than ever.

You are correct. Synthetic is safer with less gear involved. Wire ones can be relatively safe if you throw a good moving blanket or something fabric of equal weight over the line at about the half way point. The thought process being that the energy from a broken cable will be transferred into the blanket and not someone’s head. Snapped cables are super scary. Been there, done that, not going back.

For what it's worth, I see the $479 sale on the HF Apex 12000 winch is now extended to Sunday 19 April 2026 for anyone (you just need the coupon from the HF website).

Nothing more.
