Drove 4.5 miles to the store and my Jeep spewed about 5 gal of gas all over its underside and down the road...

Began driving vehicle on short trip to the store with over 1/4 tank of fuel. Began to smell of fuel inside and noticed that when accelerating from a stop vehicle would hesitate and stutter. Halfway through trip noticed that vehicle had only 1/8 tank of fuel left and light came on. Pulled into parking lot at destination, shut vehicle off near empty and noticed trail of gasoline behind vehicle and pooling fuel below. Observed underneath that fuel had been spraying at a high pressure from the top of the fuel tank (exact source not visible) all over the underside and all over the exhaust system, pooling in the skid plates and all cavities underneath. The vehicle would not restart for tow operator.

Dealership says that the 'fuel line came off'. $100 for a new fuel line and $700 labor to replace it. I don't feel comfortable with their nonchalant attitude. This seems like a big issue.. Could have been a fire! I'm seeing that there is a pending recall for this issue on some Jeeps and Rams but it seems its for diesel engines only. I've also seen some posts on the JL forums about this but nothing here.. Seems like there should be a larger TSB or recall as this is a significant safety issue. Anyone else experience this? I'm baffled, and the stealership is being light on details to me....

I have not gotten the vehicle back yet (this happened last Friday night, how convenient), but I will be asking to see the old fuel line and hopefully get some more info from the dealership when I get it back today or tomorrow.

Dealership service departments generally do not get into the "how and why". You presented a problem and they state this is what is going to be the fix.

What could have been is not going to consume their time. That is a upstream problem to them with corporate.

You are entitled to see your removed parts since this is a customer out of pocket, but if you did not convey that upfront, your remove line may just get twisted up and thrown in the trash and not be available for inspection.

What makes me wonder is if this line was not fully seated and just could have been snapped back in or if the safety latch was not fully seated or missing?

Glad that everybody was ok though.

2020 JT Rubi with 47k miles just experienced the same problem. Smell of gas and then dripping from top of gas tank. Spray coming from fuel line just above fuel pump. Any advice on replacing the gas line myself?

try to order a new oem line? Those plastic lines with form fitting press fits are really hard to do and usually require special tools to get it right.

It being gas i wouldn't screw around if OEM spares are still accessible.

Thanks will do OEM. Guess if the gas tank is down I’ll go ahead and replace the fuel pump, only $85 from Mopar.

Check your insurance coverage and park beside a campfire? Guaranteed less hassle than dealing with a dealership.

LOL, no dealership for me. Parts ordered, tank unbolted, will finish dropping the tank tomorrow to get a better view of the leak.

Had the same problem on my Grand Cherokee. Only they ate through a vacuum line. Just for the line was $700. Dealer fixed it for $100. A section of fuel line and 2 hose clamps.

Not uncommon. Live where I do next to fields and farms and grain and wooded areas. You get chipmunks, mice, rats, whatever, chewing on things. Cost us a bundle to have our home's heat pump rewired a few years ago.

Not hard with the right tool

Dorman makes decent line tool: Dorman part 800-301
https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-37408-800-301.aspx
Its about $100 on amazon
Napa sells a rebrand same part number but most locations stock the fittings
a you tube how too:
