Bought my JT in late October, $46.3k MSRP, sold for $43k. Taxes/Registration renew on birth month here in KY

Tax Value: $30k
Taxes and registration: $430
The city portions are more than 80% of the whole thing

I know, it could be worse in a more expensive city.

In PA, we pay 6% sales tax at time of purchase and the annual registration is $64.00 for the Gladiator. Passenger vehicles are $37 per year

I too paid 6% at time of purchase and the actual registration is only $20. But the rest are taxes.

Sales tax is 6% at time of purchase here. Then there is "usage" tax which is insane... about $500 annually for a Gladiator or equivalent. Then there's a "U Drive It" tax for leased vehicles annually. It's all robbery.

5% of the purchase price when you first title it -
Then it's something like $440 a year after that for annual registration/license fees.
My wife's Grand Cherokee is about the same.
My Silverado was $435 a year.
My Javelin is $35, I think my Eagle may be about the same.

The government needs their $$$. You fellas that pay higher annual registration enjoy lower gas prices. Gas price in PA is around $2.75 per gallon. About 40 cents of that is in essence a vehicle tax that goes to the state.Pay me now or pay me later but pay you will.

If you lease a vehicle in PA, lease tax is 9%

About $2.20-2.50 here

Because of the unexpected higher expense, yes my budget is that tight, I can't get a set of 35" KO2s with about 1/32" of thread wear on them for $450. Some day though. Hope the 32" M/Ts do ok at an actual "off road park"

I'm curious what folks in higher cost-of-living areas are paying, like California, NY, etc.

In MD it's 6% of total cost when you title and then 207$ every two years

Live outside St Louis, MO and sales tax varies by county but where I’m at State sales tax is 4.225% plus another 2.75 to my county for a total of 6.975% of the purchase price LESS the trade value. So on mine the MSRP was 51,XXX PAID 46,400 - 21,000 Trade = I pay Taxes on 25,400 which comes out to the $1772 when I register plus plate transfer fees to move my personalized plates and title app fee. Property taxes are annual based on vehicle values. Don’t know what that will be until November

Also; paid $2.19 for gas yesterday

The sales taxes vary - 6% state-wide but then there are LOST that may apply depending on county, town/city (Local Option Sales Tax)
But the vehicle tax is a "use tax" and is set at 5% - based on the purchase price less trade-in since it's assumed you already paid the tax on your trade vehicle. So whatever the loan and/or cash price was, that's what the 5% comes from.
When I sold my Chevy instead of trading it - I had to figure that I needed to get enough more to pay the 5% and then some to actually come out. Had I only gotten say $1,000 more - I'd have paid more in taxes and been worse off.

Servicemember's Civil Relief Act allows you some options that could save you tax payments based on your state residency on record, including on property taxes (such as a car). I assume your Camp Lejeune location means you're active duty.

Hey thanks for the advice, unfortunately I've already looked into it and can't claim NC residency with my current situation. I wish I could, it'd save me like 600$ on state income tax.
