My wife and went for a Saturday drive, about 6 or 7 hours worth. First time I've taken my Freedom out for an extended run since I took ownership last November/December.

Every time we stopped at a light, the Auto Stop would shut the engine down. I'd say, "I HATE this crap !!" and hit the bypass button. Only to do it again when I restart the vehicle with me bitching about it.

After a bit, she calmly says, "Let me get this straight. You hit a button on your remote to start the Jeep. You hit a button on the remote to unlock the Jeep. You get inside and hit a button on the dash to be able to drive the Jeep. You hit several buttons to get to your favorite radio station. But hitting just ONE MORE button to disable the Auto Stop is "too much" ?!?! THAT'S the straw that broke the camels back ??. You do know that makes no sense, right ?? Do all the button pushing to get going, and when you put it in gear, hit the Auto Stop kill button. Where's the issue ??".

I said "If you're going to come at me with irrefutable logic, well, there's no talking to you.".

Sound like she's pushing your buttons too :CWL: :punch:🤔
Shouldn't have to keep pushing the button to bypass it. I get in and only press it once. Until I get back in at least.

Mine also. We were making many stops while cruising, we were checking out campgrounds around us for future trips, food and pee breaks, etc.. I guess I left that part vague....

Vehicles with ESS used to be like that. Then they changed to where they had to be disabled every time you start it.

Just disconnect the negative cable on top of the main battery that leads to the aux battery and remove fuse 42.
It's still new (to me) and I'm always leery about pulling connections and fuses in the beginning. If anything acts up, I'll always have that nudging feeling if I caused it. That passes over time, but at first I like to leave everything as OEM as possible.

Plus, I just replaced my Main and Aux battery. I did the Aux replacement going through the top, not underneath. It wasn't as bad as I was led to believe, pretty painless, actually. Plus I find it easier to work going down than being underneath working up, squeezing under the fender well, if that makes sense... I'll soon be 65 and I'm not as bendy as I used to be.

Did it take longer going "over the top" ?? I would guess so, first time, never tried it any other way. But being I recently retired, the one thing I have in abundance is time. A pit crew I am not nor need to be. I pulled the Main battery out, sat on the porch, drank some sweet tea and vaped, then went back and pulled the fuse box. Time for more tea and vape. Pulled Aux. battery. Sat on the porch, more tea and vape, Simple Greened and Griots Plastic Protectant on all pulled plastic panels, just cuz. Peed quite a few times from too much tea. Total job probably took 2+ hours if memory served. No rush.

So until I decide to pull the cable and fuse, I'll contend with bitching and moaning about it. It's what we old people do about "new" stuff that we didn't have as kids....

Could just get one of the ESS bypass cables, or a Tazer. Both would prevent you from needing to push the button once you've told the truck to turn it off, unless you remove the device.

The Tazer also adds other benfits, not just things for serious off-roaders. One thing I find extremely helpful (and you might too with age) is the plate lights turn off when you engage Reverse and you can actually see at night, especially with bad weather or some salt on the lens. There are other way to do this, but they're a bit more invasive or require more work. It does other convenient things, has a built in code scanner, and the ability to do things the truck should have from the factory.

There may be other ways to prevent this, but I found the Tazer to be the least invasive and best cost/benefit ratio of all the options when I found one for $80 off retail (new).

😂 Love it!!! She’s got a damn good point!!!

Funny you say that…. We have a Tazer and when you reboot, it, it erases all the emissions data. I have a yearly inspection on Feb 19th…. So, I removed the Tazer last week to give me 2 weeks to capture emisisons data.

When I’m driving…. I’ve been letting it *do its thing*….. It’s a confirmation (to me) that the system still works from factory - yadda yadda yadda. When the husband is in the passenger seat… as soon as it shuts off at a stop light or something, he immediately presses the button. He absolutely hates it!! 😂

The main difference is that you have an expectation to be able to press a button to perform an action ( or setting) that you’re trying to initiate or save.

with the ESS, it’s not something that you initiated, and it doesn’t listen ( or persist ) the behavior that you told it to.

thanks for posting, that was an interesting read.

Tazer will always be worth the money for me just for turning that stupid thing off, but more importantly for turning off the retarded 3 honks.

It was one button too many for me.. I bought the damn module. I would always forget and then it would shut off at the first stop. It’s worth every cent not to have to hit that button every time.

My 2020 has never done that. My GMC does. I wonder if it’s something they added in later years.

I'm in the habit of the first button I hit after start up is the auto start/stop cancel button so I really don't even think about it any more. The second button hit is the butt toaster...my favorite feature on my Overland.

You told your Jeep you didn't want it to do all that stop/start nonsense. It doesn't listen and does the same thing over and over again, making you madder each time. Your wife doesn't understand the problem. Maybe there is an analogy in there someplace.

My heated seats and steering wheel come on automatically under 40 degrees. There’s a setting for it.
