The 2500 would be the most capable work truck but you said that you want a fun toy that you could also use for work, the Gladiator fits that bill to a point. For your work there will be some compromises no question you need to figure if you can work within those compromises, if those compromises would only be a once in awhile occurrence than by all means get the Gladiator as it is a FUN truck.
Two words: Power Wagon.

I'm going to test drive both trucks this afternoon. I pretty much know what I'm getting with the 2500, but I'm excited to drive the Gladiator.

If you are not completely brand loyal, the 2020 4x4 Silverado Crew with the 3.0 can be had under 50 right now and seems to match your needs. A bigger bed, mid 20s FE with 30 MPG highway, and an almost 6' bed. A few months and it will be around 45k. Just something to consider.

Look brother! I'll give you my two cents! Before I bought this Gladiator in June, I had a 2014 Ram 1500. I had 9" of lift, All sizes and types of tires from MT to AT, 35" to 38", with a loud stereo and a few upgraded engine components! I threw stuff in the bed, a 6' x 12' trailer that I throw stuff in, and a boat that I haul. And... I took it out in the mud every now and then.

Since I bought my Gladiator, I still throw stuff in the bed, throw stuff in the same 6' x 12' trailer, and haul my boat! I've hit the trails and I've played in the mud. Only difference is now I can do it with the doors off, roof off, or all off! That's the bonus! Still have 4 doors. We take it on road trips and if we just so happen to find a trail, then..... SEND IT!

A lot of people complain about problems with their truck that they're having because it's new! But it's really not! It's the same as the JL Wrangler except longer frame, addition of the bed, and rear suspension. Rear suspension is from a RAM. My Ram had dozens of recalls and issues. Here's the rule, "It doesn't matter what you buy, If it has wheels and an engine, you will have problems!"

If you like the looks of it, it will work for you, and you want it, buy it! You only live once and you can't take it with you!
