I use a pool noodle scrap, too. I cut it in half lengthwise so it doesn't roll off when im placing it.

Maybe try mastic electrical tape, it has a little cushion and should be able to be removed easily. We use it to help waterproof primary cable we’re connections are made, it will stick to itself but doesn’t really have a sticky side. I’m sure it will “stick” to steel or aluminum. I’ll see what it does on my work truck tomorrow and snap a few pics and get back.

Pool noodles would be my answer too... although typically I just toss a clean towel up there when needed.
