OK, so i have received and opened the repacement intermediate shaft kit.

It's the bearing shadowpapa has described

Note the two images attached.

What I dont know is how I'm.going to get the inner bearing ring off the intermediate shaft whilst its inside the FAD housing? (Because i can't pull the shaft out through to axle tube...because it's to tight for the inner bearing ring to also fit through whilst still attached to tue shaft)

The fad housing pictures are thumbnails, so I’m having trouble seeing what you’re seeing. Do you mind reattaching the pictures?

Yeah that second image has gone pearshaped...

I think i have to slide the ring to the left on the shaft...its tight though so somehow I have to hold the ring whilst tapping the intermediate shaft. This is going to be fun...i think I'll have to tap it with a long bar through rhs wheel hub whilst holding the ring through the FAD housing opening.

I don’t think it’s that bad. It looks like the snap ring just needs to be removed. It looks like it’s to the right of the bearing race.

Edit: If you pull the snap ring straight towards you to remove it, can you then not slide the shaft out the tube to the right?

I don't suppose you have a torch, or an induction heater?

Don't buy lottery tickets - you'll not only lose, but they'll come and take the rest of your money, too - with your luck.
Stay away from dart games.

These are times I wish I was a lot closer to some forum members - I'd say bring it in, and we'll throw all of the tools I have at it.

It’s just a snap ring though. He has replacements, so I’d either pull it straight off, or cut it with a 2” cut off wheel. I’d tape both future halves to the shaft to avoid them flying somewhere. Since he’s got a new shaft, I’d do the same with the trashed bearing race.

What do you guys reckon tue chances are that once the collapsed bearing is replaced, the existing seals wont leak anymore?

I know its a long shot but at $900 for the 2 seals???).

The snap ring will be easy - smack the backside with a chisel and it will spread, or knock it off with a small flat punch.
The bearing - is it pressed on, or just the snap ring?
There's times when I have to "perform surgery" and remove things in more than one piece (sort of like they did with my gall bladder last spring)
I'm not against using a small Dremel tool or some heat
I don't fight things - I make it easy, where possible. But then I have a fair arsenal of tools and junk laying around to make what I need. (much to my wife's dismay)

Unless you were rough with it when you removed the outer shaft, I think you’ve got a great chance. The seal is outside the fad housing, so shouldn’t have been affected by this much. Unless the vibration damaged the seal, but I bet you’re ok. Regarding the seal cost, I thought mine was bad (it wasn’t) and had looked it up. It wasn’t near that expensive. I think it was under 100. I did buy the press tools for it. Happy to lend them out.

I'm not going to bet on it - it's possible the bad bearing let that shaft push against the seals, either wearing or splitting them.
If it was mine, I'd bit the bullet, so to speak, and leave nothing to chance, but then, it's not mine, so.........

I got the quote from two Jeep dealerships here in Australia...(im rounding the figures a wee bit)

Outer seal $600
Inner seal $300

I know i can imoort then from MOPAR to Austraoia for about half that price

($270 AUD outer seal...inner one i would just get here)

Im hearing you shadow papa...my concern is that it was clearly diff oil leaking out through the outer axle tube...if only 1 outer intermediate shaft bearing failed, why was the inner seal leaking diff oil? Perhaps the wobble in the shaft...however ive been complaining to jeep service about diff whine for almost 11 months...ive done more than 10k km in that time.

When city jeep changed the diff oil 2 months ago, the diff whine went away (axle tube wasnt leaking oil at that point though).

Can i ask...how does the FAD get lubrication?

Mine doesnt appear to have any drain or refill plug in the FAD for oil. If there is a seal between diff and FAD...how does FAD get lubricated???
