Yes, you can pressure wash the engine.
no I would never suggest full blast.
I do cover battery and alternator with plastic shopping bags. I doubt they can’t handle some water.
I start with the foam brush at the car wash. It’s more about gentle brushing and loads of soap. Then rinse with the “spot free setting” not pulling the trigger for extra pressure.
Key point- wash BEFORE A LONG DRIVE. (So standing water gets evaporated by the engine heat)
I dry everything off with a few rags. Then I use chemical guys silk shine. Spray and wipe off. Once the rag is “wet” with some of the product you can wipe connectors and lines easily without spraying somewhere you don’t want to spray.

This reminds me of my youth when my dad would detail the car before leaving for vacation. He would always, "GUNK" the engine. I am about to clean my engine for the spring, myself.

I've always just used Dawn dishwashing liquid, a semi stiff bristle brush, and a washcloth. I never cover anything, but I always use the "shower" setting on my hose nozzle. I clean it early in the morning and push it out of my garage so I don't have to start it keeping the engine cold. I towel dry any visible pooling water and like the OP said, I take it for a long drive right after to evaporate any remaining water.
