I'm the car guy of the family and I've probably helped with 60+ vehicle transactions.

The default answer when talking reliability of mainstream vehicles is Honda and Toyota. However, it's not 1995 anymore. Most brands provide a reliable method to get from point A to B, but your risk factor over time is lowest with Honda and Toyota. My initial recommendation for a compact SUV is the Honda CR-V. Motor Trend agrees. My mother in law drives a 2010 CR-V EX and it literally still drives like new.

So for best reliability / long term usage, go Honda CR-V.

That being said, not everyone eats Corn Flakes in the morning. The CR-V is Corn Flakes.

Perhaps the best driving (and very good reliable rating) is the Mazda CX-5. CX-5s have the Sky-active engine and also has a turbo option with 256 hp. Sucker moves. I had a Mazda 3 years ago as a commuter car and the Sky-active engine is very impressive. Seen by the link above, Car and Driver rank the CX-5 as the best compact SUV.

So for best performance / handling / reliability balance, I'd go Mazda CX-5.

The Mazda CX-5 is definitely not Corn Flakes, but it also is more Shredded Wheat than Fruity Pebbles. If you want some fun and like a bowl of Fruity Pebbles, check out the Ford Bronco Sport (I'm sure I'll get shredded for this on a Jeep forum...ha)...

The Bronco Sport really stands out in the compact SUV segment. Far from perfect, but a ton of character...honestly, there's so much R&D in this segment, you really can't go wrong.

We have a 2019 Toyota camry now and we really don't like it. We bought it with maybe 14k on it and the transmission has been jerking the whole time. We told them once of course they can't replicate. We thought being a Toyota it would be super nice, drive it forever etc.

Her previous was a chevy traverse. It was fine, 3rd row and awd, the climate control shit the bed (hose under hood rubs through).

What about a wrangler 4xe? I've tried to research on the wrangler forum but I wasn't impressed with what I read.
Currently I'm thinking 4 door with 4 cyl turbo. She wants a wrangler but she needs a little bit of economy.

If you are looking at that class of vehicle I'd give the Bronco Sport a good hard look. Very roomy, great on gas and surprising amount of power out of that 3cyl engine. You can get a 4cyl if you jump up to the Badlands. And it is more off road worthy than anything in it's class. My daughter had one before their regular Bronco came in and she loved it.

Not opposed to the idea. She just needs something snow worthy. We were thinking jl platform since my wheels and tires would transfer to it and things like that.

My fathers compass’s tranny went out catastrophically causing massive driveline lash and actually cracked the crank. He drives a ford now…

So are the Cherokee's decent then?
Yes I have a 2020 North Edition and it is awsome! They go like a tank when you put a set of winter tires on them during the colder months of the year.

Willys Duece and a half. Perfect in snow and will run on anything you feed it.

And it's safe as long as she doesn't run into tigers

Daughter bought one she loves it, me not so much,

I changed the oil at the end of August 21' by January 3rd it was out of oil dipstick was dry, look up the engine problems, there replacing engines and people are having the same problems with the new engine, design issue and PCM programming, hers was reflashed and bought 2 oil changes for 70$, dealers way of seeing how much oil is being consumed, they like to swap motors to rectify the problem, Of course reading up on cars nowadays you'll find the good and bad about all of them,

I was rather pissed that the FCA engine blew through all the oil in a very short time!!!

The CR-Vs has had a CVT transmission since '16, I'm still not sold on the reliability of those things.

My daughter just bought a CX-5, very nice, I'm pretty sure it has every feature that's in my wife's Acura RDX Advance Pkg with a better Infotainment set up.

I have had 2 Compass's, and a Patriot before that, and thought they all were good for what they meant for. I bought a Compass North Edition for my wife and she loves it. No issues, no problems, great fuel mileage.

Had a Jeep Compass last week as a rental while on vacation. Beyond A to B point transportation, I was not a fan of it other than familiarity of the Uconnect System with my Gladiator. Dash and trim quality was just horrible and lacked any real power and really had to stomp on it for highway on ramp merging and passing.

My son, over 6 feet tall ( about 6 3 or so) bought a Compass several years ago - when the new style came out, I can't recall the year as he's been in Florida for a while now. It's their family vehicle, they have the one vehicle. He's hauled a big trailer with it (when he moved from here to FL) and he has had the back end loaded to the point the liftgate was just making it closed and then had a receiver mount carrier on back of it loaded with more of their stuff and drove back to FL again. He's had one issue with it - the radio died. He had bought an extended warranty for the Compass so that was replaced without hassle. He's still got it.
My wife's quilting friend and her husband recently bought a Cherokee - they are used to Corvettes and other high-end performance vehicles but had to downsize since he lost his health and their investments went sour and they had to sell some things. They really like the Cherokee. They've had no issues with it and he seems to like driving it.

Not scientific or provable reliability stats but there's what I know.

Just suffered 2 weeks in a compass while my JT was in the shop.. it was horrible, uncomfortable seat, and sluggish on my 2.5 hr commute. Would not recommend one to anyone.
