If Ursa Minor made a J30 for the JT, what would it look like?
Does anyone here have the skills to draw a mock up of a camper conversion for the JT?

I've actually thought about this quite a bit as I'd like to have a camper setup for my eventual JT as I'll be using it both for recreation and as a mobile work base. Unfortunately, I don't think there's really any way to make something as slick as the J30 work on the JT. With a mere 5' bed (that's what we've figured out the JT has, right?) and a one-piece camper shell that spans both the bed and cab probably being a terribly impractical idea for a number of reasons, a J30-style roof tent isn't going to work. Your best bet is probably either a traditional rooftop tent on a bed rack or canopy with an integrated fold-over like an AT Habitat. They make the AT Habitat for Tacomas and several other trucks with 5' bed options, so I'm sure they'll come out with one for the JT pretty quickly.

The 5' version has a 32" cab overhang so the sleeping area is long enough when folded out. It looks like the overhang would make for a pretty nice table/desk area when the tent is folded out, too. Here's a couple quick mock-ups I threw together that should give you a pretty good idea what a JT with a Habitat will look like.

Thank you for throwing that together. I was thinking about the extra bed length and the pop-top as well.
It will be fun to see what the aftermarket will come up with for these trucks.

Another option is always a bed rack with a hard shell pop up tent on top like this:

I like this idea as you can store the tent when its out of season, and still have usability of the bed. That AEV rack has removable cross bars so you can still put tall items in the bed as well.

I do really like that set-up, and I may end up going with something along those lines. It's easily the cheapest and most versatile set-up. But with a couple of kids and a lot of use for a mobile work base when they aren't with me, an AT Habitat would ultimately be more useful to me.

Nicely done mock up and I can tell you as the designer of the Habitat that you are not very far off of what we have planned. You can count on a JT Habitat being available shortly after the JT release.

Great to know! By the time I'm ready to get a JT (probably MY 2020) I'm sure you guys will have Habitats available for it, so I'll definitely be very, very seriously considering one.

It would be interesting to have a cab pass-through in the Habitat similar to the old Toyota Dolphin RV's. That wouldn't be quite as fully usable as the J-30 but a Habitat with a pass-through into the cab of the truck is probably about as close as you could get with the JT. With the JT's hardtop (likely) being made from fiberglass, it would be a lot less of a commitment to cut an access hole in the truck's top than on something like a Tacoma. Mess up and you're only out a replaceable top.

jscherb over on Expedition Portal has made some pretty impressive removable panels in the JK's top. It would even be interesting to make a removable panel in the hardtop that you could remove for access while camping but put back in place and still isolate the cab from the bed of the truck when moving.

since the JT will most likely have the freedom panels, if a company designs it correctly, you could remove the entire hardtop and replace it with the new aftermarket design and the pass through is all but guaranteed at that point. I am really excited to see what these great companies have planned.

If the JT has a Sky One-touch option like the JL (which I hope it does, because the Brute looks goofy with the top off), you’re already there.

The Brute looks very cool with the top off. The JT will look very cool with the top, door, and windshield off. I guess with a handle like Renegade you should be excused from not knowing what goofy looks like :cwl::puke::giggle:

There have been other post about something like this. I would love to see a cabover camper top that replaced the hardtop. With a rumored payload of 1,400 removing the top will save a little weight. I would also be removing the front and back seat, spare tier, and anything else to help.

One member did bring up a good point about the bed and the cab being two separate pieces that will move individually. I don't think that will be a big deal for someone to engineer a camper top that will be flexible to make up for that movement.

Interesting concept, I would love to see an actual one.
