It is my understanding that an inline 6 (or a V12, which is two inline 6 cyls) is the only engine that *naturally* balances, and doesn't require some sort of additional balancing system to avoid shaking itself to death. Thus helping it to better longevity.
It depends on what you mean by "balance".
But generically, the I6 like the 258 (4.2) and the 4.0 use a neutral-balance flywheel and "harmonic balancer".
The crankshaft rotating mass is balanced to the weight of the reciprocating mass by the counterweights - note the holes in the counterweight here -

the harmonic balancer is trim and light compared to that of a V8 or I4. And you can freely swap flywheels or flexplates without needing to have things balanced out. They are all neutral balance.

A straight-six engine has perfect primary and secondary engine balance, resulting in fewer vibrations than other designs of six or fewer cylinders. (per wikipedia)

If an appropriate firing order is used, a straight-six engine has perfect primary and secondary engine balance. The primary balance is due to the front and rear trio of cylinders moving in pairs (albeit 360° out of phase), thus canceling out the rocking motion present in a straight-three engine. The secondary balance is due to the crank throws being arranged in three planes offset at 120°, resulting in the non-sinusoidal forces summing to zero for all free forces until the sixth order.

And all these sites will offer free electricity to make up for the increased cost of the vehicle, right? I suspect not.....
Again, the cost of the vehicle is nearly the same. The 4xe after rebates is the same price as the ice version. A base model 3 is nearly the same price as a loaded Honda civic. You get free gas somewhere? It's ok for gas and diesel to cost money but electricity should be free?

"After rebates" presumes you are able to get these rebates, and (even if you do) means that you're supporting these "discounts" with increased taxes to fund these "rebates" that the government is supporting. NOTHING IS FREE.... the costs are just disguised.

And no, I don't expect the electricity to be free, but I'm pointing out that at typical rates for use of a fast charger, there are little to no savings over gas.... so I've financed a more expensive & complex vehicle that likely suffers even more from depreciation and costs nearly as much to run. I'll pass on that until they come up with a way to offer a 10 minute charge at residential electric rates.

Straight off Google...

Inline-6 cylinder engines are known for their inherent balance, achieving a smooth running experience without the need for balance shafts or other complex balancing systems, due to the way their pistons and crankshaft are configured.

That's a gross oversimplification. All conventional engines will balance. Four, six, eight cylinders...they all divide into 360 evenly. None of them are better or worse than others.

How often are you only home ten minutes at a time? Hybrids are more complex, actual EVs are less complex than gas vehicles and far cheaper to maintain. And again only slower...a tesla is priced nearly the same as a civic without incentives. It's neither more expensive nor more complex. Even if the DC fast charging is the same cost as gas, you could use that option when you need it and still save a bunch by charging at home at night. Wether I agree with tax incentives or not, so you honestly think they'll give it back to you if nobody buys EVs?

As a person who has built a few I6 engines - yeah, the configuration of firing and so on makes them not require massive harmonic balancers with off-set weighting and so on.
Look at the balancer of a 6 compared to a 4 or V6 or V8.

They can be scaled up for massive industrial engines without balance issues.

I prefer a V-6 over a big block V8. I loved the inline 6 on my 1988 comanche 4x4 pick up. No major repairs and got me to work an OSV on the beach. 200 +k. Even the 3.7 in my 2012 Liberty, no major problems,.I remember in the army in 1968 the Jeeps, I think had v-8 in them. they could be flipped real easy. I was told they were top heavy. I like my V-6 JT.

I would like to see the new Hurricane motor in the Gladiator. The 3.6 is a nice motor I have them in both of my Jeeps but it's time for a new power train.
