A man in Finland has blown up his Tesla vehicle with 66 pounds of dynamite in defiance over the cost of a new battery after he claimed to face a $22,000 repair bill.

Tuomas Katainen, who lives in Jaala village in south Finland’s Kymenlaakso, exploded his 2012 Tesla Model S at a former quarry in a video uploaded to YouTube.

The Tesla S model 2012 cost around $57,400 to $77,400 when it was released.

Tesla’s warranty covers battery replacements if the capacity drops below 70 percent within 150,000 miles or eight years of purchase, leaving some owners of the older models facing large repair bills.

Lol saw that vid. Wonder if he could have had a remanufactured set installed by another shop ? maybe a second opinion from a reputable shop? Either way that tesla is in thousands of pieces now lol.

I know of a place here locally that reman's battery sets for hybrids. Price of the pack is less than half of new an comes with 3 year warranty believe.

I'd imagine that its not the only place that remans battery packs

He only put 1,500 km on it? That would certainly still be in warranty, so I'm assuming he bought this heavily used. Seems fishy.

If I had bought a beat to shit BMW M car, I would not be shocked to see a $20k bill for a powertrain replacement. My first reaction would not be to destroy this thing though.

I would also expect our Jeep's to have about a $10k bill if we wanted our Jeep dealer to install a brand new pentastar. And we're not talking nearly the power level of the Tesla, the difficulty of replacing the entire battery of an EV, and the logistics of shipping it from middle of nowhere Finland to the nearest Tesla location.

2012 model year - 10 years old. The warranty for newer Teslas is a lot better, but for a 10 year old car, not so great.

I tried a reman battery from Napa once. Won't do that again. Lasted about a year.

Read a similar story a few months ago (quoted over 20k for battery replacement) with different outcome.

I'm live in Norcal Bay Area with lots Tesla around, but i don't really see many older models around anymore. All that gas saving cost couldn't make up for a new replacement battery.

My neighbor Model 3 was in the body shop for over 3 months just for a door repair/replacement. While making the payments and no loaner.

Often problematic when replacing only one or two batteries in a pack, though. I know, they've had one go 2 years but I've seen different results....... eventually the others fade and then you have more issues down the road. Maybe good for a short-term fix, but that's a pretty pricey short-term fix, IMO. 5 grand "betting" that it will hold out a while longer.
