I wonder what the logic is with putting ESS on manual transmission or for any car really? Does it really save you THAT much in gas that the technology is worth putting on every car. I purposefully turn it off in my Cherokee bc it’s annoyance as hell.I've been happy but maybe I do not know any better. I drove a manual 2000 TJ for 14 years, that is the only comparison I have. Been driving a 2014 Pilot since then and have been wanting to get back to a manual. I test drove a manual JL prior to ordering and was blown away by how much smoother it was than the TJ. I've only been driving the Gladiator around town and have been very impressed. Am not taking it on the interstate until I clear 500 miles. Reverse is very simple with the collar lift. I turn off the ESS the second I start the car, otherwise, I felt like I was stalling. ESS is honestly pretty straight forward, but I have been getting 20mpg without it, and that's with about 50% of my miles in the mountains so far.
