More modding than enjoying?

Is it just me or is there a trend of builders out there that spend more time modding and building than enjoying their rig. I see more people adding parts and mods than just getting out there and enjoying their rig. I have a friend that s constantly building his rig, working on it, and upgrading parts but I've only seen him on the trail a few times in the last six months while I his the trails all the time. Maybe I'm wrong (which I have been before), but take the top off, remove the doors, and enjoy your rig everyone. That's what you bought it for! Right??!!!

True! I do love to turn wrenches on my own rig! Did all of the work on my own vehicles since I was 16. I guess I love to show own my work too. On the trail. I've know a couple of guys that I've only seen on the trail a few times. Heck one barely evens drives his because he's working on it so much.

But, I agree with you! For some, the modification and building is their enjoyment. Didn't think about that at first!

it snowed 10 inches 8 days ago, was negative 23 three days ago and getting another 6 inches tonight.......top won't be off for a while, but i'm enjoying bombing around in the snow!

I am probably one of the guilty parties, but I love wrenching on my Jeep as much as I love wheeling it. I do take the doors off if we have more than three days in the forecast without rain, but decent offroad parks are 4-5+ hours away. With 4 younger kids it's easier for me to work in the garage and have fun than to plan a weekend of wheeling. It doesn't help that after going to Moab all our semi local trails are no longer exciting .

Jeep's are like Harley's. You have to build them to fit what you want out of it. And also like Harley's there is an aftermarket piece for every single thing you want to change. There are no other cars built that have the aftermarket support of Jeeps. But I am finished with that rat race. My stock Rubicon with 35s is plenty for me. I'll do soft or half doors. A bikini top. A steel bumper and winch in the next year or so. That's about it and I'm not really in any big hurry. I'll upgrade after I've broken something but not looking to change things for changes sake.

Guilty as charged.

It's easy to find an hour during the week and a couple hours on a Saturday to mod the Jeep. It's another thing entirely to load up the fam and spend 2-3 days a few hours from home. Life gets in the way.

But... eventually we will be in the woods this year.

This has been the story of my car building hobby since I brought my first car, a 1964 Mercury Comet with a 269 V8 and auto for $40 in 1972. I’ve always said it is 2/3 building and 1/3 driving. I really enjoy the planning and execution. Typically, I plan, build, drive, sell, repeat. That said, my Rubi is a keeper and even though I have made significant modifications and it is practically finished (are they ever really finished?) I am thrilled every time I see it, start it and drive it. I don’t see that ever changing.

It kind of boggles my mind - people start planning their mods before they even get it and see what it can do. I take mine out for a trip and if there's something I find I really need or something that would make things easier after a couple of trips, I put it in, but it's driven by use, not some weird need to modify and customize for the sake if it. With a Rubicon I find there's not much it needs, so the mods have been fairly small - enclosed storage, which I've admittedly iterated in a few times trying to find the best solution given it's a daily driver, mud flaps so the family can get in and out without getting dirty if we drive through snow or down a dirt road, and the all weather slush mats for the same reason. The only mods I added before needing it was a winch, but I transferred it from my jlur so I knew I'd use it, and a trailer brake controller.

I think most people here would agree that half the fun of having a Jeep is working on it.

i've always liked the idea of fast cars.......fastest car i've owned did maybe a 13.5 in the 1/4 mile. I had more fun on an autox track anyway.

once i started following the Gladiator, i've liked the idea of a big lift and 40" tires........i'll probably be happy with my 33" LE wheels and Alu-Cab for many years.

Reminds me of about 15 years ago. A few of us on a “team” decided to rebuild our trans with a very tall first gear. On rolling starts, we were in first in the power band while others were in second but lugging. All’s well and good until someone with a normal first took pole and decided the roll was going to be ssssllllloooowwww. We were WAY below optimal RPMs. Stock gears prevailed that day and pretty much every day after that. It only worked if one of us took pole. Expensive lesson learned.

You already knew this...

There's a reason a Jeep is the most modifiable vehicle you can buy as there are more aftermarket parts and accessories available for it than any other vehicle.

There are many people (usually men) who enjoy building things. Perhaps you're missing that gene?
