It seems the thinner oils are great for colder weather and some MPG gains, but offer less wear protection and less heat protection.

You know you're opening an industrial size can of worms.

You're going to have the people that worship at the altar of the manufacturing engineers versus the people who follow the whim of every interwebs guru versus the people that don't listen to either and run what they want to.

Run what you're comfortable with and let that be it.

Lower viscosities are used to decrease our use of fossil fuels. Just look at the definition of viscosity. Viscosity is a measure of a liquid’s resistance to flow. Higher viscosity results in less efficiency. Less efficiency results in more gasoline. Engineers have many challenges. And their output isn’t a function of what they themselves want but what those in power want. That’s how our world is functioning at the moment.

It’s the same idea with the shape of jeeps. The windshield angle and front fascia changed from the JKs to JLs JTs to decrease the air drag coefficient. Sure, it may have other benefits… some people like the aesthetic.

the above are facts.

I’m not a motor oil or engine wear expert but I read a lot, I’m an engineer, and I would consider myself logical. I would much rather have a 5w-30 in the top end (camshaft, etc.) of the engine rather than a 0w-20. Film thickness will be greater and film strength will likely be better on a 5w-30 compared to a 0w-16 or 0w-20.

if we want to reduce gasoline use, how about we drive more conservatively?

Lunentucker, I do the same… 0w20 in the winter and 5w30 in the summer.

On a somewhat related note: I’m actually using the same oil filter for ~15k miles/3 oil changes. I think I’ve gone ~6k on it so far. I’ll inspect it, take pictures, and create a post. I can’t be the only one who will find this interesting! The filter is a Fram endurance FE11665.

Hot viscosity is close enough it doesn’t even matter. Your engine warms up very quickly. Now 0-20 vs a 15-40 or 50 is a different story.

None of your business.
I appreciate PFs test discipline. In my simple mind, you can’t argue with the wear scar results. He was careful to close by saying to follow the manufacturer recommendations.

I run no lighter than 40 weight oil, usually HD diesel variants, in all my gas engines. Folks on this site have a fit about my oil choices. They’ve worked for me my whole life and I’ll stick with them until I see a reason to change.

To each their own though. Lots of Pentastar have run many many reliable miles on 20 weight government oil.

I’m running 0w40 in my pentastar now. All is well.

All I know is my GT500 called for 5w50 and no one made that oil other than whoever was OEMing to Ford! This 2009, sure it's around now.
